Is Medicine the right Career for me?

Hi everyone

I am interested in studying Medicine but I got rejected this year and was wondering if I should still pursue this, or explore other careers that I would be suitable in or be successful in. Since I didn’t get into med school this year I have lost some confidence and questioning if I would be a competent doctor, so any help to set me back on my tracks would be great.
I was thinking of becoming a psychiatrist since I'm fascinated by psychology, probably due to me being a double Pisces (sun and moon), but that’s still a long way away and other types of profession in the Medical field will probably appeal to me as well, except being a surgeon is a definite no no.
I've attached my birth chart.
It shows that:
I have no planets in the 10th house of career unless you count lilith. Sagittarius on the 10th house cusp with its ruling planet Jupiter in the 6th house of work, health and service, so this is probably why I want to work in health.
M.C. is Sagittarius which suggests I should like professions involving travel or teaching, and offers independence.
Cancer on the 6th house cusp so I like to deal with the public.
Chiron also in the 6th house which I don't think is a good placement for the "wounded healer".
I can find some talents but nothing prominent. I might have missed something since I'm still a beginner
Any insights would be appreciated.

PS. if you find any latent talents such as psychic ability or anything interesting about my chart please comment ^_^

Re: Is Medicine the right Career for me?

Welcome to the Forum, teena.

I think there are astrological answers and practical answers to your question.

In terms of practical issues, have you spent much time around ill or injured people, such as volunteering at your local hospital or doing a stint as a nurse's aid or something similar? I ask this because you have that very strong and sensitive moon/Sun conjunction in Pisces. This should make you very intuitive about people, which should be great for diagnoses or getting psychiatric patients to trust you; but sometimes a patient-care sort of job is too much for people who are very sensitive because they don't have a lot of built-up defenses again suffering and negativity from others.

Also, have you met with or talked to admissions officers at the medical schools to which you applied or might apply to? It is OK to ask them why you weren't admitted; or what were the qualifications of this year's entering class. You can't do much about your undergraduate record, but if you didn't get a solid letter of reference from a former teacher, you applied for really prestigious med schools vs. mid-ranked ones, or you wrote an application essay wasn't what the admissions people were looking for, these are things you can change for another round of applications.

You've got some good indicators: ruler of the 10th (Jupiter) in the 6th, and a very powerful trine from Pluto to your sun and moon. You've also got some squares from Uranus and Mars, so hopefully you have your temper and go-it-alone tendencies under control. If the health care profession really appeals to you but the med school door bangs shut, you might try something like psychiatric nursing, physiotherapy, x-ray or MRI technician.

Re: Is Medicine the right Career for me?

Dear Teena,

As far as your talents. You have a grand trine between your Sun-Moon conjunction and your Pluto, and Chiron (sixth house placement for Chiron is fine). Particularly since the Pluto is in Scorpio, and in the eighth house this could give you real insight into other's behavior, psychic skills, as well as the ability to transform others. You also have a mutual reception between the Mercury and Mars- they are in each others' signs, which would sharpen your intellect.

Other indications of ability in psychology are Venus in the second- you value relationships and can money from them, ruler of the 2nd is in the fourth - your energy goes into thinking about family, background, soul work, Jupiter in the sixth (mental habits), and the ruler of the sixth is in the 1st house- health issues are 1st with you.

Your nn is in the twelfth house, along with its ruler, Saturn which rules this house as well. This indicates a real need for seclusion, privacy, introspection in your work. The nn ruler here indicates also a need to focus on the spiritual issues, rather than practical ones also consistent with psychology.
With Uranus conjunct Neptune, as ruler of your Saturn, you might have additional abilities to see the direction that society is taking, and/or take it into new directions.
Your sn ruler is in the sixth, which could mean that you would get bogged down in routine, meaningless work. You are not meant to do this! Figure out if you really want to be a doctor (you would need to do at least some surgery if you did). If so, then get some volunteer work experience, recommendations etc, and go for it, or consider some other branch of healing (especially psychology, or sociology), which allows you to do research, be introspective.

Wishing that you accept all the blessings that you recieve,

Leeuba

Hi, Teena!

And that's exactly what makes psychiatric analysts. Lilith in the 10th is the position for analysts!
So, try it again and work as you can. Your Mars in the 4th could indicate the effects from your own analysis which you have to do if you want to go into this career.

You couldn't have a better ASC for this job as you have!

Good luck!

Re: Is Medicine the right Career for me?

Thank you all for replying back to me. I really appreciate it.

Waybread, the sun/moon conjuction in Pisces does make me very sensitive and I get way too emotional to what people say to me. Though I don't show it very often I get the blues easily. It's not so bad now that I'm older and learnt from it. It's actually the reason why I'm still unsure whether or not to go into medicine. A part of me feels that it would be a bad decision and that I might not be able to deal with the stress and grief.
The more I think about what to do for a career, the more confused I get, and stuff like being a biomedical engineer starts popping in my head from the middle of nowhere with more questions marks >_<.
I will be doing a lot of work experience this year since I couldn't do much when I was studying, but now that I'm on a gap year it'll be a good chance to explore.

Thank you Leeuba and Sunny for showing me that psychology would be a good option.
Though I'm not sure if counseling is a good choice for me in applying psychology. My question might be silly but does my chart indicated I'm better to be involved more to the research side or towards communication?

I'm very undecisive and feel so lost that I don't know what I want anymore. I'm hoping astrology could guide me and tell me what would fulfil me in a career. I'm sorry to be a pain but if I don't go into healthcare, are there other strong indications on my chart as to what I could go into? Maybe science? Or is a career in healthcare something that is necessary for me?

Re: Is Medicine the right Career for me?

Hi, Teena!

Could it be that your hesitations are due to a little tendancy for introversion ? I think really that the job as an analyst would be very good for you.

Your universe is in communities (hospital or monasteries), you aren't anxious about ambitions and can certainly be to the service of others. It is an adventure you have to examine and to know if you prefer working alone or being in frequent communications with others.

Is there another thing what disturb your deciding ?

Good luck!
Sunny

Re: Is Medicine the right Career for me?

Teena, if you have good grades in a medicine related field, for sure go ahead and apply to graduate school and think about a research career.

Sometimes a career really jumps off the horoscope, but at other times it is far less clear; notably with a "splash" type of chart in which no sign or house has more than a couple of planets and the chart does not have a clear pattern. In such a case, the person might actually thrive on diversity: if not multiple careers, at least a job that offers her a wide variety of tasks.

In addition to the ones I suggested in my previous post, there are other careers that involve patient care, but that wouldn't put a sensitive Pisces in the midst of a lot of human suffering. This might be something like hospital administration, pharmacy, optometry, or the research interests you suggest.

Re: Is Medicine the right Career for me?

Dear Teena,

You mention that you are way too emotional to what people say to you, and that you are very undecisive. That's very consistent with having your SN in Cancer, which is ruled by that Moon in Picses. With this placement, you are not as in control of your emotions as is best for you, and are too sensitive, also especially to others' suffering.

I can see why you hesitate to go into either medicine or psychology. Also the SN is in the sixth house, which is a house of routine, and practical reality. Ordering tests, etc and having to do things in a very structured way as you would as a doctor is not very good for you either.

I'd like to tell you the story of a little girl to illustrate the SN in Cancer and how by accessing your Saturn, you can turn your life around in a way that would be very positive for you.
There once was a girl of about four or five, who was very upsetting to the household. She threw tantrums, and food and in general was very disruptive. Her parents had hired several governesses for her, but they had quit or been fired. They loved her very much, and decided to try one more time. The governess that they hired for her, came from a poorhouse and was blind as a child. She could see, however, quite clearly that the girl was spoiled, that the mother who loved her very much simply could not discipline her as she needed. This encouraged this child's infantile behavior. This governess was very determined as she needed to be to overcome her difficult childhood, and she was finally able to pursuade the father and mother to allow her and the child to move to a guest cottage on the family estate- away from her mother. Then she proceeded to use her iron will to tame this child. And she succeded. One day, while she was pumping water, the child came to the water pump. And this governess, spelled the word for water in her hand, for this girl was both blind and deaf. Now she had done this many times before when the child was still throwing tantrums, the girl was too easily frustrated to pay attention. This time the girl was calm enough to understand. This girl, in case you haven't guessed yet was Helen Keller, who SN was also in Cancer. (her moon was in the fourth house, which can be an indication of infantile behavior. Later in life, she decribed her relationship with her mother as too close, and she called Anne Sullivan her Teacher and savior (Saturn, which ruled her NN was in Aries in the fifth) A stern teacher and, in general learning, and a love of learning was the way she learned to overcome her extreme emotions. People who knew her later in life, described her as incredibly happy which she explained as being able to live in the moment (another meaning for Saturn in the fifth in Aries) her birth data is June 27 1880 4:03 pm LMT Tuscumbia, Alabama.

My point is that the key to overcoming your emotional problems lie in developing your Saturn in Aquarius, which is in mutual reception to your Uranus conjunct Neptune in the 11th house. This is a scientific and inventive placement. Since your NN is in this house as well, this is a good placement for research of some kind, especially one where you could be inventive or you where studying something unusual, or certainly Uranian/ picean, pushing the envelope in some way. For example if you where doing research in how the brain functions, in a wholistic creative environment, so that you could find ways to help the mentally ill, or those who are paralysed, I think that might appeal to you. Biomedical research could also work, just as long as you didn't get too stuck in just the mechanical aspects of this. With your Venus in the second house, you might want to create beautiful prothesis-no one, it seems, wants an ugly fake hand.

Placements in the fourth, sixth and twelth houses can also be associated with public service and the twelfth house is also about working for large instititions. Perhaps you could do original research in the social sciences, in some way that would benefit others. For example, what behavior patterns are associated with gaining weight. Or research in psychology

As you get older, your moods will continue to stabilize especially as you find ways to activate that saturn (meditation, or work with a spiritual master or teacher might also help. You will have many ways in the next year to test this out in work experiences and fine tune it.

Wishing that you accept all the blessings that you recieve.

Leeuba

I dont count Lilith with anything. I see that perhaps sports medicine, rehabilitation and teaching are possibilities. You would be quite psychic and intuitive it is true and you can use that to be empathetic. I see young people involved.

Leeuba, this is an interesting account of Helen Keller, memorialized in the stage play and film, The Miracle Worker.

Of course 1/12 of the human population will have the SN in Cancer, without living such a remarkable life!

Re: Is Medicine the right Career for me?

Thanks for all your replies. It will help me a lot over my decision.

I didn't realise that my SN in cancer had such an impact on my emotions. Thank you very much Leeuba for guiding me.

There's something on my chart that's been bothering me. Is there a t-square on my chart? I can see M.C. in sagittarius oppose Mars in gemini, both of which square Moon in pisces. I'm just not sure if you can have a t-square involving the M.C. coz it's not 2 planets opposing each other.

Hello,
Truly I disagree with everyone saying that medicine is not for you!

I too have Sag on the cusp of my 10th house with Jupiter in the 6th.
Perhaps a career as a Nurse?
Nurses roles as a provider are so immense. It seems as though at times we are the MD's. They call, ask about a patient and sometimes it is up to the Nurse to give them the reccommendations. After 12-13 hours spent with a patient it is the Nurse who knows best!
Perhaps your moon is too sensitive to be an MD anyhow. MD's are not cold, but they do have lots of reservations about getting close to any patient (in my 6 years or so in the profession).
That 12th house Saturn is pulling your responsibilities to those that are ill, in hospitals, and charity work.

Why cant a person with much sensitivity work with a patients suffering?
I would rather have someone like you caring for me, rather someone without these wonderful attributes.

Re: Is Medicine the right Career for me?

I think you need to put a psychic shield around yourself in emotional situations so that you can be empathetic without getting dragged down into their problems. You need to keep a distance. Just make yourself a mantra and keep repeating it so that it gets to the sub conscious and then you can evoke it in stressful situations. I use " I only invite positive vibrations and experiences." Nursing can belong to the 6th and with the Moon there or strong Cancer then it would be suitable for nursing. THe 12th deals with hospitalisation, retreat and institutionalisation so again nursing can be involved but more in the hospice situation as it deals with death or more to the point, passing over. Saturn is what we have to deal with in real practical terms and where we have our fear and the need to mature and grow from it. It is where we reap what we sow and does have strong past life and karmic ties. The NOrth Node in the 12th is the major pointer to your path this time around and in Capricorn adds to the Saturn influence. You will rise to a position of responsibility once you have made up your mind. You were last time in positions of caring for babies in an employee or servant position with the Cancer SN in the 6th. A nanny for example. This time your calling is to rise to a higher position and to work hard to achieve your goals. I wish you luck. To temper discipline with caring attitude is the fine line to walk.

Re: Is Medicine the right Career for me?

Thank you for your replies. I'm sorry for replying so late, my computer broke >_<.

I've done some thinking and I've decided not to go for medicine, but into biomedical engineering. Bit random coz it's not related to psychology or is a direct form of healing, but I really like the idea of being inventive in my career, where I can design and solve problems using equipments in healthcare. The Mercury-Uranus square is going to be challenging but I'm gonna get some work experience to explore further in my gap year. Hopefully this is the right career path for me.

Thanks for all your help.

Teena-
That makes total sense, you have those 12th house placements and working in the background of the medical institutions will be wonderful!
Good luck on your new career venture!
