Ancient ring dial???
I recently purchased a universal equinoctial tool ( ring dial ) from an old antique shop for 10$. Normally the center band has 12 zodiac signs, and for some reason this one only has 10.
First I went searching for a calendar that only includes 10 months and all I could find was this:
The original Roman calendar was said to be invented by Romulus, the first king of Rome, at around 753 BCE (Before Common Era). The calendar started the year in March (Martius) and consisted of 10 months, with 6 months of 30 days and 4 months of 31 days. The winter season was not assigned to any month, so the calendar year only lasted 304 days with 61 days unaccounted for in the winter.
However they still used 12 zodiac signs. Next I found reference to atlantis (lost city):
In later Lemuria (races 3.4 - 3.7) and early Atlantis (races
4.1 - 4.3) the zodiac of 10 signs applied. It was governed by Capricorn and
Capricorn also marked the end of that zodiac. This zodiac in its certain
mutations applied from some 20 million years ago to 5-10 million years ago.
The weird thing is Capricorn is not on my tool, nor is cancer.
Anybody have any ideas as to why there's only 10 signs on this tool and what civilization/culture only has 10 signs?

The following 97 word extract is sourced from http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Ring_Dial.html
QUOTE
"A Ring Dial/two-ring universal equinoctial ring dial - was a cutting edge scientific instrument 500 years ago! A sundial that tells the time wherever you are - if the sun is shining. Developed early 17th century by English mathematician William Oughtred, it was a development of an earlier instrument, the astronomer's ring, used for measuring altitude of stars/terrestrial objects. You must know your latitude, so this is the first adjustment made. Secondly you need to set the date using the sliding section in the middle. Then you rotate the inner ring until it won't turn any more"
IMO viewing a pic of the 10 zodiac wheel on the item you purchased would assist with discerning its origins - as to whether it is in fact an ancient - or possibly a modern reproduction

Re: Ancient ring dial???
I'm guessing it's a reproduction based on its condition. Still could be worth a little more based on the fact that there's only 10 zodiac signs.

Re: Ancient ring dial???
Cancer and Capricorn are not included because they are tropical signs indicating the farthest north and south declinations of the Sun.
The setup of the signs in pairs demonstrates what in astrology is called anticions or anticia or solstice points. This is when the Sun's declination is similar in each of those related or paired signs. For example, you see Scorpio and Aquarius are paired together. It is when the Sun is in either of these signs that the declination of the Sun is basically the same, though in one the Sun is moving to its south declination and the other, its north declination. The Cancer/Capricorn signs neatly divides this relationship of the signs based on similar declination.

The notion that Capricorn is the final sign in the Zodiac goes along with what that Kabbalists have deduced from the Bible as to the "force of God coming from between Capricorn and Aquarius".
I've made mention and given explanation of this in quite a number of threads...the one I originated and tiled "A Runic Explanation of the Zodiac" is one of these threads. I also just made further mention of it in a thread, in this very same sub forum, concerning the "Thema Mundi" and chart Houses.
