Books needed to study traditional astrology

Please recommend beginner's books to study traditional only astrology. And when I say beginner's I mean dumb beginners.
Also, are there any good online courses for traditional astrology?

You might want to do a little more exploring around the forum, I believe there are a number of threads on this subject. I think "Llewellyn's New A to Z Horoscope Maker and Interpreter" is pretty thorough. Cafeastrology.com has a lot of good information as well. I used to go to the bookstore and library when I was learning astrology and stand there for hours reading. The Internet has a wealth of information out there that is free. Astro.com you can obtain free horoscopes from too. Have fun!!

I frequently visit many internet sites, including cafeastrology, but I have no way of knowing anything about the quality of these websites. Also, most of them are non-traditional, rather modern ones. I have the charts from astro.com as well, which is indeed an excellent source. Thanks for the suggestions.

There are lots of good online courses for traditional astrology. I'd look some up for you but I'm on my phone's internet and it's mind-numbingly slow. Just Google for medieval astrology courses (they mostly use ancient techniques... mostly).
A good book on the subject is one I just purchased last month, Classical Astrology for Modern Living by Lehman. The book assumes you at least know some of the basics of astrology (the stuff universal across all forms) like what the planets and signs are. But if you're looking for an introduction into traditional methods, I'd go pick it up.

These are all fine books, although Lilly's Christian astrology could be a little confusing simply because the way he writes is back from the 15th century so you might have to read through it a few times. Also, you said you were not interested in modern astrology as much, do you mean you aren't interested in learning about the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto? As you may or may not know, before these planets were discovered some of the other planets ruled more than one sign i.e. Mars ruled both Aries and Scorpio, now in modern times it rules Aries and Pluto rules Scorpio. The other thing you might want to consider is learning astrology, signs, houses, rulers, aspects, symbols, etc. before getting into predictive work with transits, progressions and solar arcs.

Vista, I am a very tiny bit past the rulers and aspects, yet have no clear sense of direction. When I say traditional astrology, I mean no karmic/psychoanalytical stuff, just the plain nitty-gritty of good, solid old fashioned astrology. My desire to learn traditional astrology stems from trying to help a dear friend (see my Mental Ilness or Drug Abuse post). Does this make sense?

Not with those two! Progressions are modern. Find something on profections and directions, they were used in traditional astrology (and are actually useful).
There are only a few things moderners do that get my blood boiling:
1. Using the outer planets
2. ABC = 123 house systems
3. Progressions

17th Century, actually, although I agree with the rest. It takes some reading over to understand Lilly. Some revised editions are easier to understand, however.
I'm not talking about the actual house system, I'm talking about "1st House = Aries = Mars" logic that moderners LOVE to perpetuate in their complete ignorance.
