China and the Solar eclipse of Aug 01 2008

Hi Folks: Just thought this might get a discussion going....

What is an eclipse?
There are four types of solar eclipses:
*A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Sun is only partially overshadowed by the Moon.

*A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely obscures the Sun. This happens when the Moon is near perigee# and its angular diameter as seen from Earth is identical to or slightly larger than that of the Sun.

#perigee: the point in the orbit of an object (as a satellite) orbiting the earth that is nearest to the centre of the earth; also the point nearest a planet or a satellite (as the moon) reached by an object orbiting it.

*An annular (ring-formed) eclipse occurs when the Moon's centre passes in front of Sun's centre while the Moon is near apogee.# The Moon's angular diameter is then smaller than that of the Sun so that a ring of the Sun can still be seen around the Moon. This is similar to a penumbral eclipse.

# apogee : the point in the orbit of an object (as a satellite) orbiting the earth that is at the greatest distance from the centre of the earth; also[ the point farthest from a planet or a satellite (as the moon) reached by an object orbiting it.

* A hybrid eclipse occurs when the curvature of Earth's surface causes a single solar eclipse to be observed as annular from some locations but total from other locations. A total eclipse is seen from places on the Earth's surface that lie along the path of the eclipse and are physically closer to the Moon, and so intersect the Moon's umbra; other locations, further from the Moon, fall in the Moon's antumbra and the eclipse is annular.

The term "solar eclipse" is not strictly correct-: the phenomenon is actually an occultation. An "eclipse" occurs when one celestial object passes into the shadow cast by another (as with an eclipse of the Moon). An "occultation' occurs when one body passes in front of another. When at its new phase the Moon passes in front of, or occults, the Sun, as seen from Earth, the Moon also casts a small shadow on Earth. An "occultation" of the Sun is therefore also a partial "eclipse" of Earth.

The following excerpt is from NASA
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEmono/TSE2008/TSE2008fig/TSE2008globe1a.JPG

On Friday, 2008 August 01, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half the Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in Canada and extends across northern Greenland, the Arctic, central Russia, Mongolia, and China. A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes northeastern North America, most of Europe and Asia.>

< The point of greatest eclipse, where the shadow hits the surface of the Earth most head-on and lasts the longest, is near the Russian city of Nadym, with 2 minutes, 27 seconds, of totality beginning at 3:27:07 p.m. local time.

The centre of the track follows the China-Mongolia border for several hundred kilometres while the central duration and the Sun's altitude both decrease. From Altay, China, the total eclipse begins at 10:59 UT and lasts 1min 25s with the Sun 25° above the horizon. Across the border, western Mongolia is very sparsely populated and the Altan Mountains bring cloudiness to the area. Ten minutes later, the umbra just misses Hami, China where a deep partial eclipse of magnitude 0.998 occurs at 11:10 UT. This region in northwest China is noteworthy because it offers some of the most promising weather prospects along the entire eclipse path. Its position between the Gobi Desert to the east and the Talikmakan Desert to the west spares it from the monsoon systems that affect much of Southeast Asia during the summer months.>

During the final ten minutes of the umbra's track, it quickly sweeps across northern China as the duration of totality and the Sun's altitude decrease. The major city of Xi'an straddles the southern limit where maximum eclipse occurs with the Sun just 4° above the horizon. From the central line 106 km to the north, the duration of totality still lasts 1min 35s. Seconds later, the axis of the Moon's shadow lifts off Earth and the central eclipse ends (11:20 UT). Over the course of 2 hours, the Moon’s umbra travels along a path approximately 10,200 km long and covers 0.4% of Earth’s surface area.

Horoscope of China · China's natal chart
The People's Republic of China was formally established on October 1, 1949, 3:01:36 pm CCT, Beijing, China

The eclipse will fall in China’s seventh house, at the very time the eyes of the world are focussed on the forthcoming Olympic games.
Echoes of the 2008 earthquake might overshadow the China Olympics this year, and that event drew attention to the safety of some building practices.
The eclipse closely approaches China’s natal mars, and is (within orb) but separating from an opposition to China’s natal first house moon in Aquarius.

Transiting Jupiter , in China’s twelfth house , is inconjunct China’s natal mars and closely square natal Neptune, (an aspect that China has in the natal chart, and Neptune is posited in the house of death.)
The ruler of the eighth house in China’s natal is Mercury, closely conjunct, (wedged between) the sun and Neptune. This in itself is not an auspicious configuration, particularly as the sun and Neptune apply to a square with Jupiter, natally in the twelfth. Mercury is retrograde, but sextiles mars in the ninth.

Transiting Uranus will be sextile to natal Jupiter on the day of the eclipse. China is closely approaching a Saturn return and transiting Saturn is sesisquadrate natal Jupiter at the time of the eclipse.
What’s helpful in the chart is a sextile between transiting and natal mercury between the seventh and eighth houses, but as mercury is caught up in the eclipse it is likely that communications may go awry.
What is not helpful in the chart are squares to China’s MC by transiting venus in the seventh and transiting Neptune in China’s first house. China’s reputation, integrity will certainly be under the microscope.
Below is the horoscope for the August solar eclipse set for Beijing, China.

Solar Eclipse of August 1, 2008. Beijing, China. 6:11 pm local time.

The fact that the solar eclipse is visible in Beijing makes it active in that area. The connections between the eclipse horoscope, China’s horoscope, and the earthquake triggers are all in place.

The eclipse occurs at 9°32' of Leo the Lion, conjunct Mercury the divine messenger. It conjuncts the nebulous cluster of *the Aselli *, the Asses, being closely conjunct Asellus Australis, South Asellus (a star of the Sun and Mars), which is considered less than fortunate.

.Among the stars of Cancer is a small grouping called the Aselli, or Asses and along with Praesaepe (M44) the Beehive or Manger, form a mini constellation in their own right, which appears on the back of the Crab’s shell. Popularly this configuration was also known as the "Manger", or "Crib" in which Christ was born - (it has been suggested that this is because Cancer was the "Gate of Man"). They were the Northern and the Southern *** Colt, the , or Asses, of Ptolemy and the Greeks; the Aselli, or Asini, of the Latins, and now popularly known as The Donkeys. Other names were "A Resting Place", "Ending of a stop", "The Aselline Starlets".

The Arabians similarly knew them as the Two Asses and called this star "the Mare ***" (female donkey).
The eclipse is also conjunct Giansar a star of Saturn and Mars in the tail of Draco, but one which is less unfortunate.
Giansar:
A small orange star in the Dragon's tail located nearly midway between the Pointers of Ursa Major (beta Merak and alpha Dubhe) and Polaris. -Hebrew name Giansar, 'the punished enemy'
It is traditionally held that the Aselli are generally unfortunate, harbingers of death by fever, fire, hanging, beheading, or violent catastrophe, ruin, disgrace, wounds, hurts to face, eye trouble, blindness, imprisonment – and great changes in society .

South Asellus in particular is known for military preferment, blindness, eye trouble, shipwreck, mass murder, horrors, and a selfish, uncooperative spirit, but Giansar gives a penetrating mind, bringing travel, friendships and ingenuity into prominence, though it has been known to stimulate robbery and even accidental poisoning.
Issues to do with contamination of the water or food supplies may come to the fore.

According to Vehlow, the Chinese gave this group of stars the name The Spirit of the Ancestors and were of the opinion that, if conjunct the Moon, they would produce peculiar experiences with the realms of the dead.
The Aselli are representative of the Sun and Moon, so their prominence in this chart is increased, but the need for caution, especially in travel, business and with fire is emphasized. (I hope the Opening Ceremony at the Olympics wasn’t going to involve fireworks).

The Fixed stars belonging to Hydra, the Water snake, are also conjunct this eclipse. According to Ptolemy these bright stars are like Saturn and Venus. It is said to give an emotional and passionate nature, threatened by great troubles, and to cause some interest in shipping.

This eclipse does lie in the shadow of the upcoming Mars/Uranus opposition on August 6, suggesting it would be a waste of time to try and coordinate group efforts. This aspect is aggravated by the simultaneous opposition between Mercury and Neptune, which advises us not attempt anything that requires logic and clear thinking, and suggests deception may prevail. The
organisers of the Beijing Festivities need to bear in mind that information and ideas may be illusive, intentionally deceptive, or even quite dangerous. Thinking is likely to be clouded.

From William lilly page 15
In his treatise on the effect of eclipses, William Lilly elucidates on how the effects may be judged and what events may be expected from them. He writes………..

'To Know what kingdom or City the effects shall belong':
"In every great Eclipse of the Sun and Moon you must observe the place in the zodiac, that is in which of the twelve signs the defect is in and consider the Kingdoms, cities or countries subject unto that sign, according to their several distributions… You are also to take notice of the midheaven, viz., or sign culminating of the King or Principle Govenor of the Kingdom , Metropolitan City or country or if at his birth either of the lights were near the degree eclipsed…….. if you have the Ascendant of a city, town or corporation .. or any new or old inception.. the greater the eclipse is and by how much more near to an Angle the Eclipse falls, the more strong and forcible the Effects demonstrate themselves….."

So this seems like quite sound astrological wisdom. We must observe which place in the Zodiac the eclipse, which he calls a defect, falls, and in this case, China’s enemies are likely to make an important mark in the weeks of the Games, following the Eclipse.

wonderful are those effects of an eclipse […] when it is in a fiery and regal sign; […] those people who are intended to be most sensible of this eclipse’s influence are in part kings, emperors, princes, dukes, magistrates of the highest rank and quality in every nation… and these so great alterations in this microcosm shall be so glorious, so conspicuous and apparent, that […] they shall stay amazed and wonder at the eminency of them.”

These too, are the words of William Lilly, writing in Christian Astrology in the 1600’s. As this eclipse falls at 9 degrees Leo, it seems if we are to follow Lilly’s understanding we can expect leaders, emperors to play an important part.

The eclipse in history
Eclipses have always been associated with legends, myths and symbols which constitute a rich source of inspiration in different cultures and epochs.

Chinese astrologers wrote of an eclipse occurring over 4 000 years ago. Historians and astronomers believe that this was an eclipse that happened on 22 October 2134 BC.

Most of the ancient legends evoke a celestial creature devouring the Sun - a dragon for Indian, Indonesian and Chinese, a giant frog for Vietnamese, a jaguar in Argentina, or a vampire in Siberia. These celestial monsters were held responsible for the disappearance of the Moon or the Sun.
One Chinese legend reports that the total solar eclipse in China on 22 October 2134 BC took everybody by surprise. Therefore there was no time to prepare the archers and the drummers in order to fight and frighten the dragons which devour the Sun during the eclipse.

In fact, the official imperial astronomers His and Ho, missed the prediction of the eclipse. Not only did they lose their work and the respect of their colleagues - they also lost their heads.

For the last sixty years of documented observations, only one such event occurred over the Central Russia - it happened on 11th August 1999, when at noon the Sun was in fiery royal Leo and got almost completely covered, such that the bright summer day significantly darkened. On 19th August 1999, future president Putin was promoted to head the Russian Government.

There will be yet another total eclipse with Sun in Leo (and on royal star Regulus). This will happen on 22nd August 2017 over the United States, visible at noon in the capital. It promises a great leader for the country. Since this will be a presidency mid-term, watch then a vice-president or another elevated administrator.

An eclipse repeats its degree every 19 years. One way of looking at what it can bring up on your chart is to ask what was I doing around the beginning of August 19 years ago?

Future Total Eclipses Visible from China
During the next 90 years, there will be 7 more total solar eclipses visible from China.

Lillyjgc, Thank you for all the work and preparation that went into this post! This is important for the astro community and i appreciate your willingness to gather and document for us all this upcoming eclipse and the shadow it casts on China as the Olympics approach.
I have really only thought about how it will affect me thus far and once again, i am prompted to view this eclipse from a much broader scope. China is set to play a huge role now for the world community at a time when cooperation between nations is vital. Your post came as a blessing for me this morning and i wanted to express my appreciation! -Astromony

My word, how long did all that take to type up?

My own feelings regarding that country and it's dreadful human rights record is that somewhere, some time, retribution will be dealt a firm hand..

OK. I've found data on the President Hu Jintao. Heres his chart-no birth time so I have set it for noon.
21 Dec 1942
Lat: 45:17N
Long:130.59E
8Hrs East.
No dst.

(Jixi is in the eclipse path btw.)

As we don't have a birth time (anyone?), we cant consider the house positions, but at 6 degrees leo he has pluto, not badly aspected natally, except for the fact that pluto is part of a yod in his chart, with the apex at 7deg cap-venus and an inconjunct also to venus from saturn at 7 deg gemini ..and not especially activated by any transits, although mars is currently squaring his natal saturn thus *setting off the yod*.

I do notice though that he has mars and uranus opposed in the natal and these two will be opposing again around August the seventh-just before the Games are to begin. This particular aspect can cause sudden events of a most unexpected nature. Mars in Virgo opposed uranus in pisces...I'd be looking closely at water contamination, or a sudden outbreak/epidemic.

Heres a link to our Forum discussion about the China Earthquake and it's relationship to the February Eclipse.

However, due to the very nature of the Chinese government, it might be wiser to look at the government as being one entity as opposed to various personalities, which is often how we see leaders in the west.

Just updating:
I found this news report tonight:
(19/July)....
Mass evacuations as killer storm nears

Article from: Agence France-Presse

July 18, 2008 10:32pm

CHINA evacuated 360,000 people and called 61,000 fishing boats back to shore as it braced for Tropical Storm Kalmaegi, which has killed at least six people in Taiwan.
The eastern provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang were expected to be hit late today, the official Xinhua news agency said, quoting provincial flood control authorities.

Kalmaegi, which had been a typhoon, had weakened to a severe tropical storm, Xinhua said, but was still packing winds of up to 90km/h.

The seventh severe storm this year, Kalmaegi is also expected to affect Shanghai today and tomorrow, according to Xinhua.

Great work! Very informative lillyjgc, thank you! What a lot to digest. Your work on the fixed stars, amongst other points, is superb – thanks so much for putting in web links to see the actual stars in the signs, very thoughtful.

To add to the magical element of this Olympics, which might be of interest to you, is how these games are being held on the 08-08-08. According to the Chinese Flying Star school of Feng Shui, we are now in period number 8. With so many 8’s accumulating greater significance to this ‘infinite’ number, the same number as the astrological house of extreme drama, power and transformation, obsession and secrets – also the house position of China’s Sun, Mercury, Neptune conjunction, one could say this is a numerical (fix-8-ed!) super power!

The time of the official games opening is also at 8pm.

This most recent mass evactuation seemed to slip by the euro press. What a lot of shifting about China has had to do this year, what with the earthquake and all. All this makes it quite some Saturn Return!

You've also heard of the death of a U,S Relative in the attack in China for the olympic games? China also has a relationship with Russia, and Prime Minister(though it can be debated he's dictating that country) Vladimir Putin.

I suspect this Saturn Return will mean the destruction of China. Through utter foolishness in being near Vladimir. How anyone can listen to the words of a man who basically says "Because we contribute, we should be able to do whatever want" is beyond me. Vladimir isn't as spiritual or as smart as he'd love to proclaim himself to be.

China’s enemies are likely to make an important mark in the weeks of the Games, following the Eclipse.
I have been reading this over a bit and thank God nothing happened at all during the Olympics, in fact, everything went extraordinary well, except for that one incident :the death of a U,S Relative.

Personally I had expected things to be far worse as it would have been a target point par excellence of course.

Just updating this thread.
China has also been involved in an International Food contamination of Milk-involving melamine. This certainly affected their export industries and also lowered their international reputation. It followed closely after the Games too.
I read that over 19,000 children were killed as a result of the Quake that reduced many schools to rubble, revealing shonky building practices over many years.(That does sound like the work of Saturn /Uranus to me.)China had its Saturn Return around Sept 08.
