You might try to combine transits and progressions and keep a diary about what happens in your life, but generally with these two prognostication methods "each part is sold separately."
Probably you are working with secondary progressions. Although there are other kinds, this is the most common one. You can either do an entire progressed chart, which progresses your house cusps as well as planets; or you can show progressed planets around the perimeters of your natal chart. Both methods have interpretive value.
With secondary progressions a year of your life is set equal to a day on an ephemeris. So a 30-year old person would find his sun has progressed to the position it was in 30 days after his birth. The other planets would progress to their positions on the 30 day mark, which normally would be either slower or faster than the sun.
Another method called solar arcs basically progresses everything as "a year equals a day." Here all of the planets for a 30-year old would be 30 degrees past their natal positions. Some astrologers think this is a superior method for timing events.
A good book on transits is Robert Hand, Planets in Transit.
Basically your birth chart is the basic road map. Progressions indicate how you are growing and changing on your journey; and transits indicate more external events affecting your trip. However, this is not hard-and-fast, and the two work synergistically.
