Will A. receive a present from O?

I am chatting on MSN with a friend of mine, who yesterday asked

"Will O. bring me a present?" This guy went on a short trip abroad, and she - who is madly in love with him - is hoping that he will bring her a present.

This is the chart

I chose the first house as her significator, and the fifth as the significator of the present. The seventh house of course is the guy she is in love with.
I thought: the chart is not radical, then I considered that at the time she was asking the question he had just arrived to his destination. Therefore I concluded that the chart could be read.
Very briefly, in the beginning I saw that there was no aspect between Jupiter (my friend) and Mars (the present) and said no. Looking more carefully, I noticed that a RX and combust mercury - signifier of this guy - translates light from mars to jupiter. Also, mars is in the guy's first turned house. My conclusion therefore was that she would receive something very small, something she will not like and not be happy with

I should have stuck to the absence of any aspect between the significators, instead of looking for other indicators in the chart. My friend did not get any present,

Mercury doesn't translate the light. The distance between a perfect aspect with Mars is more than 5 degrees. This orb is too wide for horary to consider, especially that Mercury is moving away from Mars, not towards it.

Nora, I did not know about this limit of 5 degrees. You read about it somewhere?

Right, Mercury is separating, therefore it cannot translate the light! My eyes were too tired and I didn't notice that. As for the orbs, I didn't know about this five degrees limit, so I used Lilly's orbs instead.

Yes, Goca. I've read several times that an orb of no more than 5 degres is permitted in modern horary. I know that traditional astrologers, like Lilly, allowed much wider orbs according to the planets involved.

From my own experience, which is not that huge really, wide orbs never worked with me. I use wide orbs only to see if there's an uncertain potential. But to get a sure interpretation, I stick to the 5 degree orb rule.

I'm still studying however. I may encounter examples in the future that could change my mind. Afterall, Lilly knew what he was doing. He must have had good reasons to use wide orbs.
