Understanding Houses?
Hi, I am extremely new to AW and astrology itself.
And for the past few hours I have been trying to learn the basics, or perhaps I'm just been filling my head with random facts and not really creating a solid foundation for myself...
[Much of it from http://www.astro.com (which seems to be a very legit site)]
I learned soo much from the information on that site, and I am still learning. There is just soo much! I think I may have become overwhelmed if I didn't take a break from reading.
I was able to understand most of what was explained, except the Houses.
That confused me so much.
I see what each house stands for, but I don't know how I can relate it to me.
How can I tell what House I fall under? Do I have only one house? Or is there just one dominate house and several less dominate houses that each person falls under?
And the charts. I was beginning to slowy understand them, but I would like a simplified explanation for what they mean.
Also, I read a lot of what I thought were the basics on the astro website, but is there a thread that tells the basics of astrology that will help me get started here in AW. Because I still don't understand much of what many of the people are talking about.
Thankyou in advance.

Well, you relate to each of the houses in some way, some more strongly or more weakly. So we each 'have' 12 houses, but some are more important to us than others, and we interact with each differently. We look at planets in the houses and planets ruling those houses to find out how.
The Sun and Moon in a house signify particularly important areas, and Saturn might indicate a house you have a difficult relationship with.

Check out the stickies in the Natal forum:

And there's lots of stuff in the Education forum:

You can always ask questions. That's how I learn best, a mixture of reading and asking.

Re: Understanding Houses?
Thank you so much! I am so much closer to fully understanding.
I now see what horoscopes mean when they say "venus entering capricorn" or something like it.
So....does that mean when a different planet enters a sign, it's a different house?
I know there are 9 planets, and then there is the sun and the moon.. That only makes up for 11 planets. Where does twelve come from? And can Earth enter a sign? Or am I getting this completely wrong?
I guess my main issue is determining when I am in a house, and which one.
Like if someone says "Mars in Scorpio 11th House", I want to be able to understand exactly what it means. :/
I feel like I am soo close to fully understanding the aspects. Just a few things I can't quite tie together..

If most house systems, the house cusps are independent of the sign cusps, so Venus crossing the Capricorn sign cusp won't necessarily mean also crossing a house cusp, but it might.
If you use a whole sign house system, then the signs and the houses have the same cusps, so then it would.
House systems are a major point of contention among astrologers, and there are many opinions about which is best to use.

There will usually be empty signs and houses in a chart, they don't need to have a planet each.
Traditionally, only the 7 planets visible with the naked eye were used.

Hmmm, Perhaps you'd like to post your chart, then we could use some examples to explain things?

Well, what don't you understand about that?

Synthesis is one of the most challenging parts of the art in my opinion. Keep at it, and it will start coming together...
I wrote something in a thread yesterday that might be useful to you http://www.astrologyweekly.com/forum...48&postcount=2

Re: Understanding Houses?
Houses are areas of life. You have to look at house rulers as well as planets in houses, and then planets that rule those etc. etc. The complexity of astrology reflects the complexity of life, basically.

link to Moog's thread http://www.astrologyweekly.com/forum...ad.php?t=42613 which is called “whole sign houses and the MC”
newcomers are sometimes unaware of the way whole sign houses were intended to be used and Moog's thread as well as byjove's thread http://www.astrologyweekly.com/forum...ad.php?t=42163 “whole signs today” are two good threads with plenty of discussion that beginners can learn from
In no other area of astrology is there so much mess and confusion than in the area of the so-called "houses". T here are at least twenty or thirty different house systems or means of dividing the so-called "birthchart" into twelve segments of life activity. here's a link with a short article with details about house systems http://www.librarising.com/astrology...ignhouses.html
upload of visual explanation of what houses are

Re: Understanding Houses?
A learning tip for the beginner:
Mars in Scorpio in the 11th house:
mars: action and external expression: how we go about seeking our goals and intentions;
Mars in Scorpio: having a deep and penetrating drive to find the hidden depths of understanding and purpose in life; if afflicted can relate to combativeness, violence and anger/control issues...Scorpio[power] is also suggestive of how we defend ourselves against attacks or threats...
expressing through the 11th house: the interplay between the 5th and 11th house relates to issues of love and creativity...so are there opposing factors from Taurus? Are there any trines [anchors] to support the expression of Mars?
Many refer to the 11th as 'hopes and aspirations, also friends and social associations...then to seek further clarification, what house does Mars have rule over?...matters connected with that house will also be of consideration; what is the condition of Pluto [as ruler of Scorpio] in the overall chart? next it is then important to consider the aspects to the planet Mars, as to whether they will be supporting of more positive outcomes, or expressed more through violence, combativeness and anger.
Mars is also a component in what i call the relationship chemistry and should be studied especially in relation to Venus and the Moon in the chart...
the rising sign shows how we project ourselves out into the world and how we think we are perceived by others: in truth this is just the brilliant disguise we wear in public, whereas the 7th house shows how others actually react to this mask of the persona. Look then to its connection with the Sun and Moon and you will discover more about your personality signature...the Sun and Moon combination represents the equilibrium between the yin and the yang energies...are they in balance are in conflict?
Personally I perceive of the houses as representing specific dynamic polarities, representing cause and effect: what we give out to the world will come back to us through the opposite house...
just some things to consider

Re: Understanding Houses?
Mars rules Scorpio. In Scorpio, it is at least domiciled by sign and triplicity. When Scorpio is in the 11th house, Capricorn is the Ascendant. Aries is the 4th house, so the ruler of the 4th house is the ruler of the 11th.
