Voices in a tunnel

Being a very practical earthy person I find it hard to get my head around anything which happens to me that I cant explain.
One thing which I remember quite clearly and have never had an explanation for is something which happened frequently to me as a child.
Between the ages of about 5 and 11 I suffered a lot with asthma,along other typical childhood illnesses.Often at this time in my life and in particular if I was sick I would have an experience when Im semi concious of being in a tunnel and the tunnel is moving quite fast and I can hear voices calling my name.Not particular voices that I can recognise but not especially strange either.
As I said this experience took place whilst I am semi concious eg just entering or coming out of sleep or while dozing.
Another feeling I used to get frequently,often along with the tunnel experience was that my whole body would feel like it was made of stone,or some hard metal inside and out.It was like I could feel my body on the inside as myself and as if I am physically touching it on the outside even though I am not.
Not really sure if I can explain it well enough for you to understand.
But anyway since then this has happened to me maybe twice in adulthood that I can remember.
Ive heard about people having near death experiences seeing a tunnel etc but Im sure that I was not near death when this happened to me!As I said it did happen especially when I was sick but also when i wasnt sick.
I suppose what I would like to know is does anyway have an explanation for any of this and has anyone experienced anything similar?

I have heard of other people having similiar experiences. One that comes to mind was Dr. Judith Orloff ( a spiritual psychologist and author). I remember reading in her book about when she was in an auto accident as a teenager. When the moment of impact came, she went in a tunnel until after the impact, and so was saved from serious harm. Although, I'm like you, most of the stories have been associated with near death experiences.
