Real fast, you'll want to study
Hellenistic Astrology for a discourse on this.
One of the first things you'll learn is that "Parts" is an incorrect term, they are actually "Lots," and in fact their origin is not Arabic, but Hellenistic. So, essentially you'll want to research Hellenistic Lots in order to discover how they were invented and used.
Certainly, you'll first learn about the most important one, the Lot of Fortune, which is truly the most important thing in any horoscope; as well as the Lot of Spirit.
Without using these two major Lots, you would not know the fortune of the native or event. The other Lots are used for clarification in particular areas.
The Lots are used as secondary Ascendants. The Lots become the 1st house they are read in that way, generally.
A major consideration is the 11th sign from your Lot of Fortune. There is the bestower of your riches and fortune.
All the Lots/Parts are used in similar ways.
I don't recommend
www.Astro.com unless you have a table of essential dignities at your disposal, because there is no sign of them on that site and its rather misleading. Grab hold of the classical and medieval texts.

Lots are fun and very informative. They are necessary for example, because the 3rd house can validate more than one thing. It can show your brothers, your dreams, or it can even show your father in jail (12 houses from the 4th!). The Arabics created so many different Parts because they wanted to be able to tell the difference between the topic, and that seems to be their main use for the Medieval astrologers.
There are even Parts for silly things. Like, the lot of Melons. Melons!
The study of the lots is extremely fruitful (no pun intended), because it teaches the student to know what the planets signify in their most crude, or pure, form. This cannot be stressed enough.
Most fascinating, and advanced, is that in Hellenistic astrology, there is a particular
Time-Lord procedure which has been rediscovered, which is accurate to the day, called Zodiacal Releasing from the Lot of Spirit. And you can read about this at
