I have just been reading about traditional astrology and specifically about the sun in fall, that is in libra as most of you know. The reason given for the sun being in fall in libra was that the sun is not going to be out as long, therefore won't have as much power as when heading into summer when in aries (longer days/shorter nights). Given that a/ I'm a libran, and b/ I live in the southern hemisphere, shouldn't my sun be in dignity, as october here is when the sun is out for longer, thus being more powerful. Anyone like to clear this up? While I'm asking questions, why do we consider the sun to be dignified in aries anyway? I mean we all know that they rush into everything with no fore thought, always banging their heads on things, being in such a rush, maybe they could be sedated on days when sunspot activities are more pronounced. would any arians out there like to chew my butt off for asking this?

Well astrology (western) was written for the Northern Hemisphere and thus autumn occurs in libran times, and I suppose people have kept the time continuum rather than follow the sun.

I think the reason why libra is considered fall and aquarius detriment is for the following reasons:

Aries - I
Leo - Me
Libra - You
Aquarius - We

The sun is about self-determination and assertion. Libra and Aqu deal with relationships with others, sun doesn't like to deal with these things, hence detriment and fall.

Thankyou for the replies, I suppose the real answer I was looking for was more centered around southern hemisphere astrology, i mean does the chart do a flip down here? shouldn't my 10th house be my 4th, and what about declination? I must add that having an aries moon gives me a good idea of what it's like to be an arian sun sign,I'm always rushing around banging my head on things :), until I 'burn out", then the libran sun takes over and says "now it's time to sit down and have a rest and a coffee"....and a smoke, and maybe something nice to eat, and a chat with that good looking co-worker....

Cap,

There are some astrologers who want to create a separate astrology for the Southern hemisphere, since seasons there are reversed from the Northern hemisphere. But most astrologers have found that astrological symbolism works well no matter where you live. As 23 mentioned, since the Sun is about "self-expression" and Libra is about "relationships", when the Sun is in Libra it is very challenged since it tries to "express itself" through relating to others: a very difficult thing to try to do! ;) Similarly when the Sun is in Aquarius (friends): trying to "express yourself" through having "friends" is also challenging! As to needing to "adjust" the chart because of the Southern hemisphere, all the necessary adjustments are made by the charting program/software.

Southerly,

Tim

Thanks for the explanation , I suppose that I like to look outside the square, even in something generally considered "outside the square" like astrology here in my hometown (astrology is not very popular here in the social circles that I find myself in). Also, a local astrologer who taught me a few things and who also has 30 years of studying this art/science also found that if one has virgo, libra or scorpio rising, then the 4th and 10th houses are reversed. While not taking this as gospel, I do need to look into this area in order to find out if there is any truth to it or not. I can certainly describe my mother by my 4th house aries moon, and also by my 10th house sun and venus. The same for my father, I can find him in the 4th and the 10th. Naturally I will have to watch for this "possible quirk" in the charts of others as I continue to learn. This also brings up questions about different countries being ruled by different signs, one question that comes to mind is " Maybe there is a point on the globe that relates to the start of the zodiac, 1 degree aries, and so on. We materially richer countries certainly have a stronger venus/jupiter influence in our lives in my honest opinion, and certain countries seem to have more mars/pluto energy than what we do. I realise that I am off topic here, but having my sun in libra, I probably need to bounce these ideas off others in order to find some fresh ideas to follow up.:)
