View Full Version : Deciding on a horary teacher. Which one is best?

I like Lee Lehman and Christopher Warnock so far. Chris was Lee's student, so I'm sure quite similar. Lee's course sounds rather intimidating (she is a triple Virgo isn't she?), but I do want a comprehensive course.
Anybody have a good teacher to recommend?
thanks

I'm interested if anyone had a teacher they can recommend, or if some of the experts would like to share how they started in horary.

Hi Barbh,

I'm hardly an expert, but I'll add my two cents' worth.:p

I would also recommend Frawley, although he's not everyone's cup of tea. I've never taken any courses (I'm entirely self-taught, with a huge amount of help from others on sites like this and Skyscript), but I like his writing style.

To be honest, you don't really need a formal teacher; horary is not difficult, it just requires practice and an ability to both laugh at yourself when you get it wrong (jeez, we all get it wrong sometimes!) and to then go back and figure out where you went off in the reading.

Frawley's The Horary Textbook is a fantastic, easy-to-understand, very well-thought out book for horary beginners; definitely worth investing in. I use mine all the time! A copy of Christian Astrology Books 1 and 2 are also a necessity, being the horarist's bible; it's not an easy read, but modern texts have it set out in an easier format to understand and have taken out some of the old language. All of this will set you back maybe fifty bucks.

Skyscript has a whole set of free tutorials on horary which, by the time you get through to the end, should have you well on the way to figuring out most charts. It is truly a phenomenal website for all forms of astrology, and has free, downloadable astrological texts, too.

I would save your hundreds of dollars for a nice pair of shoes, buy these two books, plough through the Skyscript website, and then start taking on the questions posted on this site to practice (and practice, and practice). You will learn just as much, and for a lot less!

Not helpful in finding a teacher, of course...:p I got a reading from Christopher Warnock once. I like Gary Price; I don't think he has a teaching course, per se, but once you've paid for a couple of readings from him, you already understand a lot more about how horary works than you did before you asked! So maybe Gary was my 'teacher'. I got tired of paying other horarists to answer my questions, so I figured the stuff out myself! :D

Thanks for that great answer AG!
Yup, I've devoured Frawley's book and love it too. He doesn't seem to touch on the unfortunate house placements that I see keep coming up in the forum answers that you guys give...like when a significator shows up in the 6th or 8th or 12th, or when a mars placement is unfortunate, but I guess that's what forums are for! I'm definitely learning a lot from you guys. I wasn't too sure about which classic book to get, Lilly or Raphael or....but it sounds like Lilly is the best, Vol 1 and 2, so I'm definitely going to get it.
thanks again for the info
cheers

Although I *will* confess to you that the 'Advanced Horary' class offered by Warnock is tempting. There are some horarists on the Skyscript site who are so advanced, their readings blow my mind. "How did you come up with THAT?!" I wonder, awestruck. I realize I've only just stuck my toe into what there is available to learn. But I seem to do okay at this level...for now...:D

Another thing you might want to consider is investing in a good horary software package. Tikana, Starlink and some others use Solar Fire, I believe, and you can tweak its format to suit your needs. It has all sorts of 'extra' information, like antiscia, speed of motion, etc., which can be very helpful in more complicated charts.

Just a thought...

Best,

AG:)

Why not get in touch with someone like John Frawley:

http://www.johnfrawley.com/

I see that he does correspondence classes by email. I think he's pretty amazing - been a friend of mine for ten years and now he's moved to Poland :(

Why did Frawley move to Poland? Was it the girls ...? :)

I learnt horary almost entirely by myself, off the internet, reading books and experimenting with lots of charts until I understood most of the tricks. Having someone experimented to ask is a plus.

There is a person I would recommend, her name is Lee Miller, she owns a horary list at YahooGroups, named leesforum. You might try to drop her an email, maybe she'll agree tutoring you for a while.

.

Disillusioned with Britain and his wife is Polish. According to The Times there's a mass exodus going on because of house prices, taxes, too many CCTV cameras and the weather. Even the Poles are going back.

Interesting what will happen to Britain (ruled by Saturn) with Pluto moving into Cap.
