View Full Version : Contradictory synastry aspects
Hi guys,
How would you interpret seemingly contradictory aspects in synastry.
Person 2's Venus is *sextile* Person 1's Mars with an orb of 2 degrees and *sextile* Person 1's Jupiter with an orb of 1 and a half degrees.
V2 (Venus of second person)-sextile-M1 (Mars of 1st person)
V2 - sextile - J1
But
Person 2's Mars is *square* Person 1's Venus with an orb of 9 degrees and Person 2's Jupiter is *square* Person 1's Venus with an orb of 2 degrees.
M2 - square - V1
J2 - square - V1

Hey Yoi - long time no see.
I'm going to take a stab at this one, as I'm trying to learn synastry better. Others can correct me if I'm off-base.
I have found that sextiles are not always positive. They are energies that dovetail/work together. They can sometimes be patterns within each of the persons that dovetail together, but not necessarily for the highest good.
Possibly Person 2's Venus is dominated by Person 1's Mars, and so "goes together with it" - flows and works naturally with it because the pattern is already there to do so. Possibly this is because P2 sees value for self (consciously or subconsciously) in doing so (the sextile to P1 Jupiter and the opposing square to Jupiter.) I wouldn't use the Mars square. Personally, I think 9 degree orb for a square is too much. Perhaps the 9 degree orb signifies that they do not have the assertive power (Mars) to stand up for themselves in the relationship with the other (Venus), so they "go along".
Signs and houses or a visual would be make things easier, I think.:o
Just some thoughts..... feedback is appreciated from all.

Hi Yoi,
Without seeing the chart its hard to assess....but like Freedomlover says a 9 deg orb may be of little effect but remember that venus and mars will be square by sign or house as well....
If thats the *worst * aspect showing, I'd say theres not much to worry about....but it really depends on whether the planets are in dignity or debilitated and the blending effects of the signs involved. As I have been taught, look for positive aspects between the luminaries, then the personal planets. Often the *outers* are *generational*....I had a very long term relationship with a person whose synastry with mine was truly tough.jupiter/venus aspects arent so bad because of the benefic nature of the planets. All the best, Lillyjgc
Hi
Thanks for all the comments guys! Unfortunately he hasn't given me permission to post his chart. He's not sure what his birthtime is so alas we can't look at the houses. The signs on the other hand:
Person 1 (me): Venus (Cap), Mars (Vir), Jup (Vir)
Person 2 (guy): Venus (Scorpio), Mars (Vir), Jup (Lib)
So his Scorpio Venus is sextile my Capricorn Venus, sextile my Virgo Mars and sextile my Virgo Jupiter (his Venus is at the midpoint of my Venus-trine-Mars and Venus-trine-Jupiter).
His Virgo Mars is square my Cap Venus but on further reflection I think you guys are right. The orb is far too wide and the signs aren't square any way. So I don't think that counts after all.
However his Libra Jupiter is definitely square my Capricorn Venus. So how would you reconcile the seeming contradiction here - you have a Venus sextile Jupiter on one hand but a Jupiter square Venus on the other. This must occur quite a bit in synastry. Sorry, I'm a beginner here :)
Anyway, I don't think the synastry chart is that bad. The tightest applying aspect is Moon-sextile-Moon and there's also the Venus-sextile-Venus and his Jupiter in sextile to my Sun. There are some hard aspects too though of course. It's just that I'm curious about how to interpret contradictory signs in a synastry chart.

Yoi, Maybe these are not so *contradictory*...For example, say person *a* has his libra jupiter (and the* over* side of jupiter is somewhat modified in the sign of the scales:) ) square your capricorn venus....His jupiter is in the sign that venus rules and your venus in cap is ruled by saturn....I'd say this could play out a number of ways...(depending on houses), perhaps your love is demonstrated in a more practical way...you might not want to spend too much money on venusian pursuits, or may buy practical presents (just for example) and person b may want to be more generous....Separately these aspects may be fine but when you put them together, something needs to be resolved. (A square is, after all, only an obstacle that needs to be surmounted.) The square may raise the issues...Venus in cap is very stern sometimes....Depends a lot on signs....But as I see it, synastry is only a guide....Cheers, lillyjgc
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you! Thanks for explaining things lillygc!

True - sextiles only denote opportunity for energy flow. That can be great if you want to turn on a light bulb, but bad if you're standing in a puddle of water while you flip the switch. But, I generally view them as positive because at least you have the *option* of opportunity and energy flow, rather than an obstacle like a square.

Hehe... Good analogy. Yes, I agree that sextiles typically do show a positive aspect, but every now and then......
