View Full Version : Solar returns, transits and progressions

I was looking at my solar return chart of last year.
It was my first attempt to read and understand the solar return concept.
And I thought I got it.
A solar return chart shows the themes that keeps you busy the coming year.
I also think I understand how transits work.
Planets move so they make new aspects to my natal planets.
It indicates in what parts of life to expect changes.
Progressions show how much we developed ourselves psychologically.
If we compare our progressed chart to our natal chart we can see if we learned something and move in the right direction.
It's a tool to measure our inner growth.
But...
I get totally confused when I compare my transits, my progressions and my solar return chart.
It's like I'm watching three movies at the same time, about three different persons.
Because certain transits must be seen in a progressed chart and solar return themes
must been seen as well in both other charts.
Sometimes themes overlap, but most of all they tell an entire different story.
I don't have much experience in reading predictive charts.
I only take a look at my transits at times.
And I find that interesting and complicated enough.
I don't know what to think yet of progressed charts, I understand the concept,
but how reliable are progressed charts?
Because there are different methods, like a degree for a year, a day for a year or a month for a year.
Which makes me wonder if one degree or one day really represents a year.
Can anyone give me more insight about predictive charts?
(Informative links are also welcome)
And how to read them.
When you should cast which chart?
And why they don't always match?
These are the things I wonder about.

And another thing I don't get.
My natal Uranus is placed in the 10th house.
It's in the 9th house in my progressed chart.
But it's now transiting through my 4th house.
Since I've always been looking at transits, I've been thinking that Uranus is messing up my 4th house right now.
So I'm totally confused to find Uranus in the 9th house in my progressed chart.
Help!
I really don't get this

Flea it is confusing!
I am reading a book about returns now "Identifying Planerary Triggers" by Celeste Teal.
It's a good no nonesense approach to figuring them out with plenty of examples to use. You can get it through Amazon used cheap.
The way I look at these is to take the moment of the return and look at that using the Long\Lat. of where you live.If you move the chart is moved also.
I look at the data first to see what is rising, any conjunctions to angles with 1-2Deg. orb and aspect patterns. I then overlay it with my chart. What yopu actually see is a transit chart, but you need to use the transit angles also as they are most important.
Progressions are mentioned and explained in the Teal book also ,but not Solar returns.
There is so much to know astrologically that you have to weigh what is important and what is not.
This year I have my Ju return happening and all the other returns also. She goes through all of them.
Hope that helped!

Guys,
careful with Solar Returns. A lot of my solar returns HAD FAILED! I cross tested with other people's SRs as well. Some people respond to SRs from natal place, some respond to relocated SRs, the others do not respond to SRs at all!
I am not saying that it is invalid but my SRs fail. I have seen other people's SR fail as well...
I am not too crazy about Teal but I have read her book "Identifying Planerary Triggers". I rely on Robert Hand a lot more.
Fly, can you post us your natal chart? please?
your progressed chart moves 1 deg forward every year.
so let's say you were born with 0 cappie rising
now you are 20 .. your progressed asce will be ~20 cappie
uranus does not move that fast. So as your pro asce moves forward, some planets like jupiter, saturn, neptune, uranus and pluto will fall back. into the house below. the same rule applies to natal retro planets hence they move a lot slower than progressed asce.
for instance, let's say your 9th house natal is 20 aries, natal uranus is 25 aries.
your uranus is in 9th house. in 2o years, +/- your 9th house will be in early about 10 taurus.
uranus moved only 4 degrees in 20 days *1 degree 1 year*... see uranus falls back into 8th house.
Make sense?

And another thing I don't get.
My natal Uranus is placed in the 10th house.
It's in the 9th house in my progressed chart.

Hi FlyAway.
There are several possibilities for a 10th houses Uranus now being in the 9th house.
1. When you generated a progressed chart (through the computer?), did you have it *included* as part of your natal chart, or have a separate chart done for this year? In a progressed chart not only are the planets positions shown for the year in question but the house cusps which are also in continuous movement are shown as well. What you need to do is to superimpose the progressed chart upon the natal chart. Then you will see that the progressed house cusps have moved such an such a distance whereby a natal planet may look to have changed houses. You have made a very valid observation in that respect, but I don't know of any astrologer who actually treats and/or has discussed the value of natal planets in progressed houses.
2. If you have made a progressed chart within your natal chart, you have taken the progressed positions and house cusps for the coming year and placed these IN the natal horoscope pattern. E.g. The 3rd-9th axis may have progressed into the natal 4th-10th house. Natal Mercury in 3rd may have progressed to natal 4th house, etc.. IF you were born with a retrograde Uranus conjunct MC, it IS possible that, progressively speaking, Uranus has moved back into the 9th house.
Progressed positions of planets are their positions each day following your birth. So, when you're 40 their positions coincide with the 40th day after birth, when you're 55 the 55th day etc. If these progressed positions aspect a natal planet in any particular year, 'something' significant happens. Within your lifetime you are looking at the progressed planets movements for not more than 4 months following your birth date. Do you follow that?
On the other hand, transiting Uranus is the position of Uranus as it now appears in the sky in May 2007. It is currently transiting through Pisces. If your natal 4th house is covered by Pisces, you can accurately say that Uranus is transiting your 4th house. Every astrologer will know that you are referring to the planet's current position and not its progressed position.
A solar return chart provides details of the year in question, as per the moment when the Sun returns to its natal position. At this time the transiting positions of the planets may appear in yet other houses than they do in the natal chart and its progressed positions. It's then a question of attempting to tie everything together into a continuing story.... rather like the following chapters of a book.:D
The BEST way to learn how astrology is working for you is to check what happens when a planet aspects another, OR, when a significant event occurs, to look at what is happening in your horoscope chart that coincides with the planetary pattern and house realm. It's a lifetime exercise. :)

Thanks for the replies so far :)
I take a closer look at my (computer generated) charts tomorrow, perhaps I get a clearer picture.
But it still looks pretty complicated at first sight.
Why I want to understand this anyway :D

In my life I have witnessed 3personal planets by progression move across my ascendant. In transits all outter planets move across the 7th. In all cases when a planet moves to the angles or conjunct a natal there is change.
You may have a point concerning the Solar and any other fast moving planet as the planet might not have as significant of an impact or else it might not be as decernable.
I would think anyone having a significant planet placement at birth might want to consider that planets return over the Sun's. Final Depositor might be worth watching if it's one of the faster moving bodies.
Seeing that my Ju is at the 7th angle it shall be worth keeping an eye on or Ve & Sa for that matter for my chart.
Just thinking!

AHhh i see where you going with this.. I agree your most sensitive and birth time checkable points are Asce and MH. Faster moving planets ARE a trigger but you cannot have an event without a slow moving planet.. meaning that
transit and progressed planets need to be tellig the identical story in relation to your natal chart in order to create an event. I have been going through 3 years with pluto sq venus *NO EVENTS as of right now* but i know that it will change with saturn/neptune opposition conj my asce in a couple of months *july to be percise* ...
i am not thrilled seeing this event. It is not bad but i have been running away from any remote possobility of this event taking place and i dont think i can avoid it.
more comign soon.. i am trying to finish Mariska's pregnancy chart *she is an actress in *Law and Order*

I have been able to be spot on with several events in my life and then some I just overlooked.
Progressions
When my Sn & Me went through Asc. by Prog I was able to freely express myself.
In the future Prog. Asc will transit Ur and I believe I shall have an heart ailment such as a heart attack. The 5trigger might be through the transits of that year and the internal growth would be awareness Physical and psychological.
As for your upcoming transits have you come to a conclusion to what might occur?
What degree Ascendant do you have?
