Hi all,
My first time here. What a great site! I'm so glad I found it. I'm faced with chosing a date for open heart surgery to have my mitral valve repaired, a maze procedure and other thing called a myectomy. It's fairly complex but not that rare a procedure. I'd hoped to wait for saturn to leave leo but don't think I can make it.
I have a great surgeon who wants me to work this out (astrologically) because I believe in it. He's not only a great surgeon, he has a great soul and I'm lucky to have him -- but i'm still terrified.
I have so many questions... but since I don't have a date yet, let me start by asking if the following is true:
I should avoid:
Full or waxing moons, a void of course moon, sun or moon in leo. And what about retrograde mercury? Is the dark of the moon okay?
I'm a may 29 gemini with natal chiron at 24 leo and transiting pluto (oh, it's been painful) in my 6th house. My rising is 9 cancer.
The surgery is borderline electional. The sooner the better. I keep going into afib (atrial fibrillation) and my stamina isn't great. But I'd rather wait than invite a disaster.
Many thanks to all for your advice and thoughts on this.
Namaste,
H.D.

Hi HD,
I don't claim to know a great deal about medical matters, but first, what are the time parameters of this election? This operation must take place between now and when?
In an election, it is very important to consider how the election compares to the natal, because there is no point finding an excellent election only to find that it is incongenial to the nativity. So it might be a good idea to provide your natal data.
You should avoid full moons, because during surgery, it is more difficult to stem blood flow at this time, which only makes things more challenging for the surgeon, so the process would take longer. Furthermore, the Sun represents the heart, so the Moon in opposition to it is especially inadvisable at such a time, also are the Moon's squares to the Sun, particularly the waxing one.
I don't know why a void Moon should be avoided. There are occasions where a void Moon might be a favourable element in an election. In any case, a void of course Moon would be preferable to the Moon approching an adverse aspect with an undignified, especially malefic, planet.
It is also held in tradition that it isn't advisable to have the Moon in the sign representing that part of the body which is being operated on, so that excludes Moon in Leo (heart) for the surgery.
The Sun represents the heart, so it would be advisable to have the Sun as strong in dignities as possible to invigorate your heart.
Leo and the fifth house in the election would represent the heart, so try to have the fifth ruler well dignified. As you say, there is little we can do about Saturn in Leo, but it might be a good idea to relegate Saturn to the twelfth house in the election, which is the house of his joy and by far the best place for him.
You would also want the ascendant ruler and the descendant ruler in the election to be as well dignified as possible, as these represent you and the surgeon. It would be preferable to have these planets in easy aspect and having some sort of positive mutual reception, to ensure good contact between you and your surgeon.
What is your natal data, the location in which the operation will occur and the timeframe in which you are seeking an election?
As I say, I' no expert on such matters, but I'd will willing to help offer some suggestions on this.

Hi Draco,
Thanks so much for your reply and offer to help. The operation should take place as soon as possible but there are obstacles in the way. The surgeon only operates on Mondays and Wednesdays. He's offered me April 23 and 25 but it's too soon and the moon is in leo <shudder>. Then there are 2 weeks in mid-May -- the 14 and 16, the day of the new moon.
My close friend and his assistant who will see me through this leaves June 1 for 3 weeks and then we have the retrograde mercury. This makes the next possible date July 11 -- which I may try to wait for. The gemini moon's last aspect is a sextile to venus at 29 leo and the moon is balsamic so that might be good...

I've been trying to upload my chart from astrodienst and hope this works... <fingers crossed>

I'm using Placidus, but some say Koch is more accurate. Which do you prefer?
The July 11 date would put the sun in my natal first house with natal venus and jupiter so that should be good protection.
There doesn't seem to be an ideal date and I won't be able to predict the exact time. The surgeon does two each day he operates and it will take 6 to 8 hours. So the rising sign will change lots over that time!
Again, thank you so much! I will reply again tomorrow in more detail.

Oh, the surgery will be in Boston, Massachusetts.

Thanks, mwright,
I have a definite date now which I'll put in a separate post just to see what others think. It's Monday, May 14 at 8 AM in Boston. The moon will be dark, in aries (with mars still in pisces) and the last aspect is a trine to pluto (now transiting my 6th). I think cancer will be rising -- my natal ascendent where my natal jupiter and venus protect me. It's the best I could do...
I'll check these sites too.
Thanks for your reply,
