I would like to begin this discussion by linking to the latest entry in Collaborate With Fate (http://collaboratingwithfate.blogspot.com/2007/02/saturnneptune-2007.html), a blog written by astrologer Kathryn Cassidy who is a registered member of our forums.

I am personally interested in the emphasis she gives upon events that occurred in 1989--the year I and several other forum members were born--and would think it would be interesting to compare experiences. Many of us have the Saturn-Neptune conjunction natally...

SATURN/NEPTUNE 2007

On Feb 28th 2007 at 12.01pm Saturn and Neptune reach the -180- phase of their current cycle. The -180- is the halfway point or the opposition and it is the push/pull alignment, the one of the greatest crisis and tension between two points. It’s also the reflective phase where one can look and see what has been achieved in the first half of the cycle. In fact oppositions act rather like Full Moons in that conditions which began at the New Moon increase in intensity until the moment of Fullness i.e. the opposition, at which point the tension eases. The difference is that in a 29 day cycle the tension eases quickly but ,when the cycle is 30+ years as this one is, the effects may linger for some months after the opposition point.

I have discussed The Saturn Neptune cycle before but, as a quick recap, it has a particular resonance with public health, drug companies, suffering and undermining of conditions and mystical vision, Cathedrals and buildings where people come together in prayer or unity and all of this........

Saturn represents boundaries and borders, authority figures (especially Prime Ministers), pipelines, regimes and Governments, changes within monarchies and the economy. Neptune resonates to collapse, oil and gas, fear, floods, scandals, anything that spreads or is without boundaries, confusion, religious longing, conspiracy, drugs and hospitals – amongst many other things. Fundamentally though, Saturn is concrete ideas and crystallizes things and Neptune is the false of flimsy and dissolves, so the two concepts are diametrically opposed. Saturn also represents cold conditions whilst Neptune is water, the result is snow and ice. This cycle therefore has an affinity with freezing weather, frozen goods, refrigeration and frozen food.

The present Sa/Ne cycle began in 1989. If we look back we can see how the principles of the two contradictory ideas manifested, for what was begun then is now at its halfway stage and events centering around the intial manifestation may reach a crisis point. Issues reoccur and adjustments may have to be implemented. If you began a project, or started a company, or a marriage in 1989, it will be now that a period of testing will have surfaced.

1989 was a particularly eventful year in history. Here are just a few of the correspondences:-

In 1989 we saw the fall of the Berlin Wall- the structure (SA) collapsed(NE) and people flooded through the Brandenburg Gate (above), communist regimes were ousted and this led to the end of the Cold War. In this case we have an image of the people, no longer contained or restrained. Refugees flooding across borders also come under this cycle. However, the same can be said of germs which run unrestrained and spread beyond all boundaries. If we look back in the history books we can see that on December 11th 1989 Britain was on red alert due to the worst flu epidemic for 14 years. In the previous cycle in 1953/4 the Myxamatosis virus virtually wiped out the Rabbit population in the UK

You can see where I’m leading here. The fears about the recent outbreak of Bird Flu in the UK are likely to get a whole lot worse, especially up until Feb 28th when people will finally get information about the parameters (SA) of the problem and the structures that are to be put in place. Whether that information will be enough to end confusion about the truth of the situation (NE) or contain the problem remains to be seen. If at this juncture in the cycle it is not contained, it could last right through to the next phase of the cycle in October 2010.

In the Flu pandemic of 1918 the active cycle was Saturn/Uranus and not Saturn/Neptune as many suppose, however, Uranus had reached the degree of Neptunes discovery in 1846; 25 Aquarius and Saturn is now moving to oppose that degree. Pluto was in the early degrees of Cancer and this speaks of the decimation is caused to families – and the global family. Similarly to 1918, Pluto enters Cancer’s opposite sign of Capricorn at the beginning of next year, and reaches the opposite degree to that of 1918 in 2010/11 With Mayan prophecies in mind we should perhaps take care now not to let a virus loose that could decimate us in four years time.

That aside, problems with diplomatic relations between Russia and the West could reappear with a vengeance now, China should be in the news and there could be major problems in Panama, the scene of the ousting of Noriega in Dec 1989.

I can’t see how Tony Blair will survive this phase of the cycle as he personally resonates to it having a Saturn/Neptune conjunction in his chart. In 1989 The Chancellor of The Exchequer resigned and the headlines were said this due to the constant ‘undermining’ of his position. Economic collapse is closely associated with this cycle as out-of-control spending has to reigned in.

In San Francisco 273 people died in a huge earthquake in 1989 and 1,000 people in Republic of Tajikistan. This is consistent with the undermining (NE) of the structure of the Earth (SA) so if you live in an earthquake zone and seismologists start giving forewarnings of underground activity, I would sit up and take note, especially on the San Andreas fault as the astrocartography charts show increased planetary activity here this year.

Another occurrence in 1989 was the sinking of the party boat The Marchioness. I recall being struck at the time by the correspondence of the Saturn/Neptune cycle to the name of the boat and if any boat/ship is going to meet with problems at this phase, the vessel is likely to have a name that is aristocratic or royal. Outbreaks of disease onboard ships such as the QE2 or Queen Mary etc would be consistent with this cycle.

Hysteria is a further keyword for Saturn/Neptune conditions and the history books show us that Iran bade farewell to Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 amidst unfettered hysteria.

Oil has Neptunian resonance and it was under the start of this present cycle that the Exxon Valdez ran aground and the oil spill was unable to contained. Ships breaking up or running aground are indicated by this cycle. So too are gas explosions as vessels (Sa) becomes unable to contain (Ne) their contents causing pressure explosions. Watch your central heating boiler at this time!

I’m sorry to be the harbinger of such gloom and doom but this is a tense part of the year we are entering, with many potentially adverse astrological aspects forthcoming. One area that we might concentrate on to redress the balance is the fact that Saturn/Neptune cycles speak of transcending boundaries. It is during this period that we can expect – and hope – to hear of medical breakthroughs, discoveries in, or about, the Universe and people bringing their visions into manifestation. With this in mind I think we could all start to make this the period in history where what were once considered airy-fairy concepts, such as the power of positive thinking and higher states of consciousness, become accepted reality.

Ah yes... you've got to love the infective powers of the Saturn/Neptune combination.

I havn't had an ear infection in decades... Then the Saturn/Neptune opposition t-squares my Mercury (communication), I get an ear infection! It certanly doesnt seem lke a coincidence.

Nice article, also.. thanks for the post! :D

To contribute, I just found another article

The big picture: Saturn opposite Neptune

February’s main event is the second pass of Saturn (http://north-node.com/astrology-tutorials/saturn) opposite Neptune (http://north-node.com/astrology-tutorials/neptune). Do you remember campaign season last Fall, before the mid-term elections, all the dirty secrets that came to light? It looks like there’s more scandal and intrigue in store for us between now and June. The current “retrograde” pass of the Saturn-Neptune opposition is the second of three passes, and the most internally trying of the three. During this time, we absorb on a deeper level, whatever we took on in the first pass. The rules of the game are more fluid than usual this month. Plumbing problems, drowning, poisoning, and allergic reactions are all typical of a stressed out Neptune.

The Saturn-Neptune opposition has been particularly interesting to watch in the political arena. During the first pass in the Fall, some shocking secrets (Neptune) came to light, demanding that folks stand accountable and face the music (Saturn). George Allen, senator from Virginia (my state), blurted out some racist nonsense that showed his true colors, and it cost him his seat in the Senate. Other scandals involving a pedophile congressman and a homophobic but closeted preacher brought hidden issues to light, and showed us that a facade of intolerance often belies deep insecurity, and we can’t always take people at face value. Real life (Saturn) at that time, played out almost like a movie (Neptune). And the same energy is in force this month.
You can use this energy to your advantage if you consciously work with it, honoring both the practical (Saturn) and the unexplainable (Neptune). Face the truth in your life. You might be able to keep secrets from other people, but don’t keep them from yourself. Take responsibility for making your dreams a reality, and refuse to indulge in a “victim” mentality that may mask a desire to escape responsibility. Instead, be proactive. Do something tangible that feeds, rather than drains, your soul. It could be a new hobby, new schedule, or simply a solid commitment (Saturn) to your spiritual well-being (Neptune).

srikanta,

I think the challenges you describe are outlined in your Solar Return chart. Rather than going into the details of how they are outlined, let's look at possible solutions. One STRONG helper is transiting (planets in the sky) Pluto (transformation) conjuncting (energy is combined with) your Neptune (spirituality, also confusion). This transformation will give you a chance to "unconfuse" yourself about what your abilities are, how much you want to use those abilities, and how much you want to be in medical profession. Neptune is also associated with hospitals, so this transformational time can help a LOT in this area.

Also, soon transiting Saturn (duty, also restriction) will come off of your Nadir (inner world), so the restricting inward issues you have felt over the last few years will be MUCH less. Saturn IS opposing Neptune in your birth chart, but this Saturn-Neptune combination is part of a kite pattern that directs the energy into Neptune, which, with Neptune's connection to hospitals, is a definite help to your medical profession desires.

The rest is up to you. You know the situation, you understand the challenges...what are you going to DO with this energy? Do you give up and let it go? Do you go onward and push through so you get what it is you really want in life? Do you use this time to examine what it IS you really want in life? All these are YOUR choices. You are aware of them, now decide what it is you are going to do. All the choices are learning opportunities, only you know which learning opportunity is best for your personal growth.

Hi Doc. I'm haveing a hard time making out the chart degrees but I see you have very close to a bowl chart with the midpoint pouring out, over flowing across from Neptune. That is a very important point in your chart. Since Mercury is in Aquarius, the first thing that comes to mind is unique, out of the ordinary, alternative techniques. You are a healer from way back I think. I can't quite make out Chiron's degree but I can see he is intercepted. This tells me that in the past you have not been able to complete something in the Taurus Scorpio axis as it relates to the 6th/12th axis which has resulted in an imbalance. Right of the top of my head I would guess it is something like surgery as a temporary quick fix that isn't necessarily curing the root of the problem. That takes a more wholistic approach. The concentration of all the planets in so small a part of the chart definately shows a specialty area rather than broad, general practice. This interception caused (or was caused by) a deficiency in 2/8 that is projected onto 3/9. Since Saturn is quite comfortable in balanced Libra, perhaps Moon could benefit from not being so rigid, traditional or dogmatic. I see scar tissue here, as a result of surgery. My sister has to have repeated surgeries to deal with scar tissue from prior surgeries. This may be why this is coming to mind. The point here is that modern western medicine has it limitations and many of them are due to the lack of wholism and looking at the real root causes, along with greed, I'm sorry to say. They could cure cancer non agressively but there isn't much money in it.

For insight into the point where your cup overflows, try looking at your face/head, about halfway down or where ever that midpoint is in your 1st house. I can't make out the cusp degrees. This may be you nose. That tells me you know. But besides that, there may be clues to be found in face reading, which I think Auyreveda covers, doesn't it? I know in Chinese medicine, the face gives all kinds of clues as to the state of health in the body. I have one cheek that has become sunken in conjunction with arm problems. It looks like I'm starving although I'm not and not very thin right now. I don't even have a family doctor right now but even if I did he wouldn't know where to begin in finding the cause for this, would he?

Saturn opposite Neptune brings to mind the need to be realistic about our ideals but at the same time don't buy into the limits certain groups want to sell us. Often those limits are pushed because it is more profitable or easier. Other times those ideals are pushed because for the same reason. One example that comes to mind is carpel tunnel surgery. Thats the quick fix to median nerve problems caused by a job that is not appropriate for the person for extended periods. I know many people who have had this surgery but no of no one who has returned to the same kind of work and didn't have the same problems return. And besides this, they now have scar tissue to add to the lack of space for the median nerve to pass through, at least I would think this is the case. Tell me if I'm wrong.

I hope some of this makes sense to you. Wishing you light and clarity as you make your decisions.
