I have always been very skeptical of organized religion, but curious about all types of religion all the same. They frighten me and I have a strong lack of faith in anything but myself.

Your sun conjunct Uranus in Capricorn (which is also conjunct your I.C.)points to an inner rebellion against the prevailing structures, wether that be religion or the status quo in general. Your natal moon/mars.mercury conjunction (along with venus) in the 3rd in the sign of Saggitarius should give you a natural interest and drive to learn about philosophy/religion/spirituality. When someone has the majority of planets below the horizon (houses 1 to 6) then they have the energies of those planets to draw upon, so don't really need to follow "outer" influences that are represented by the planets above the horizon. This basically means that you have the inner rescources (strength) to get by in life, and don't need a god or religion for coping purposes.

I agree your sun is strongly modified/changed by conjunction to uranus and neptune, which are generational planets, but when they make contact with personal planet they will overshadow the sun's rays to make you feel more Aquarius/uranus mostly then at other times sun conj neptune, gives 'no clear self image' espec in teenage years. This will make expressions more emotional water/pisces/neptunian...

Uranus wants to challenge the status quo and neptune wears rose tinted glasses....

Your childhood would have something to do with it too I would think. It looks like it was very hard and perhaps you lost your faith then. Also, Jupiter rules religion and it's placed in your 12th house, retrograde, and not well placed in Virgo all of which would prevent it's full expression.

following on from vista's comments, religious beliefs to you are interpreted with ruler of IC/ Saggi jupiter being in fall in 12th...

Ruler of the Fourth House in the Twelfth House

There may have been unclear circumstances surrounding your mother or other close family members-perhaps mentally creating an idealized version of your childhood circumstances. You could be a very private person and you feel emotionally secure even when you are alone. This can also mean that you'll become more spiritually oriented during the second half of life, perhaps putting more emphasis on developing that side of yourself.

(Read with whole signs)

9th house is Gemini, ruled by Mercury which is in the 3rd, and so in opposition to the 9th. This would give one a rational, logical approach to 9th house matters (spirituality and religion being among them)

Jupiter (the 'spiritual' planet) is cadent and weak in the 12th and squares the 9th

Saturn (the 'realistic' planet) is strong (domiciled, not cadent, advancing) and trines the 9th

Malefic Mars also opposes the 9th. (the fear component?)

I think saturn in your 4th house contributed to this.

Interesting, I too have Sun conj Ur in the 4th house and am not religious. I rejected it when I was really young. However, in the last 10 years or so I've become increasingly more spiritual focusing more on philosophical aspects.

Sun conjunct uranus alone would suggest this from my view. I also have the conjunction in the 4th, and find organized religion suspect. Spirituality itself is very interesting and appealing to me, it's the dogmatic ways of religion that are the issue. They don't offer enough freedom, which is what uranus wants in conjunction with the sun.

I feel it's a very fitting placement for the aquarian age as it focuses on individual exploration of spirituality. I was told (by a50) that since the Sun is conj Uranus that tends to make us more Aquarian than our Sun sign.
