View Full Version : Astrology indicators of addiction? (alternative view)

I've been reading the book "Love and Addiction" by Stanton Peele (1970). In the book, the author talks about how some "love" relationships can be compared to, and are, addictions. The main point is that addiction is not a quality of an object, but it is a projection of the person's mind onto the object/addiction of choice. This explains gambling addictions, sex addictions, etc. The main focus is on the psychological part of addiction. He plays down the physical factors a lot, which was controversial then and still is now. None of the major medical or psychaitric associations endorse his ideas, but I think that they are at least partly relevant and true. But it is all a matter of perspective I guess...
Either way, I was wondering what the astrology might be in someone's natal chart who has a void in their person, who feels insecure and overwhelmed with the world, and who attaches to something (in the form of an addiction) to fill that void, to become whole. I'm thinking 7th house and/or 12th house. I'm really interested in everyone's opinion on this. I look forward to hearing from you all!

So, no outer planets, no modern house associations, please. I look forward to hearing from you all!

I can give you indicators that don't involve the 3 outers, but that won't necessarily be traditional astrology. You're asking a modern question from the basis of a self-improvement book. You won't find an answer in purely traditional astrology.
You're really talking about a lack of something, which would be Saturnine and Fire factors (planet/sign/houses of life). There is nothing else in traditional astrology to explain it, except perhaps water sign emphasis.

Gah. If Tim hadn't changed my thread title I would be able to change my mind. I really don't care at this point, I just want to see at least one person contribute. Haha. Go at it with whatever you've got. Modern is fine. I'm just curios now.

OK, first planets and aspects. Look for hard Neptune aspects, especially to inner planets, particularly Moon, or to Ascendant (not likely to catch this last one, most Asc figures are inaccurate).
There are key words here that you gave:
-- "...a void in their person..." -- Most indicative of Stressed Lunar factors, Moon in Capricorn not steadied by helpful aspects or not bolstered by other chart factors; Moon stressed by Chiron; these are just some examples.
-- "...who feels insecure and overwhelmed with the world..." = Stressed Neptunian
-- "...who attaches to something..." -- This should be considered apart from Addiction. Attachment relates to Lunar and Venusian matters, and Plutonian ones. Addiction shows in a number of ways. Relationship addiction is co-dependence in extreme, which is water-related, Neptunian, mutability. Yes, Libra/7th too, but 7th especially where there is mutability.
The strongly solar/leonine and martial/aries types are compulsive in their addiction tendencies, which is different from co-dependent dynamics you refer to.
Most of this is too theoretical. You are probably best off looking at charts of known addicts, especially those who died from their addictions. Look at the charts of self-professed co-dependents. Even Sagittarius, which knows no boundaries, can show problems of co-dependence, romance addiction.
You're talking about a combination of poor self-worth and lack of self-identity. Ultimately we make choices as to how to live and what to do with questions about what is or isn't inside us. There is no way, for example, to guarantee that you can look at someone's chart and avoid a bad relationship. Relationships are created by people, not birth charts.

Wow. Thank you. I guess I will look at some charts. I meant to do that, never got around to it though.
But now that you've mentioned it, how do you rectify the Ascendant? Will you take a look at my chart? I'll PM you my birth data.
PS: How do I find charts of people like addicts? Any good sites you know of? I only know ones for celebrities...

I changed your thread title back so it's more inclusive.
I immediately thought of #Nep (spirituality, also addiction) in aspect to #Ven (relationships) as being a definite indication of "love addictions".
Addictively,
Tim

I have to admit that this pretty much cover my greatest difficulties in my life, or the core of them, so to speak... The reason behind my problems... Exactly what I'm working on changeing.
And I have:
- Ruler of 12th in the 6th EDIT: I think my sun in 6th is so close to the dsc that it very much is affected by the dsc.
- Water emphasis
- A lot of Neptune influence
- Lack of fire in my chart
