Just wanted to get some input from you all about critical degrees. When doing charts, how much significance/weight do you put on critical degrees?

As well, what critical degrees do you use?

I use 0deg and 29deg of any sign, but then i have read the following degrees somewhere:

cardinal signs - 0, 13, 26
fixed signs - 9, 21
mutable signs - 4, 17

so does this mean for example that a planet at 0deg aries is doubly "strong" as say saggitarius at 0? (aries being card/ sag mutable)

when i delineate a chart i always include the critical degrees and attribute those planets with additional "weight"...

how do you all incorporate critical degrees into your chart delineations and how important do you think they are, AND what kind of importance do you give them?

looking for feedback.....
thanks~!

Sorry bit of a novice here, but why are these degrees important?

29 - anarectic, 0 - also some leftover thing of anarectic probably also power of entering new sign.

Fixed - 21 - is this the Serpentis thing?

Otherwise, why are they important. Are some important fixed stars at these locations?

those degrees are supposedly sensitive points, based on the premise of lunar mansions in hindu astrology. something about there being 28 mansions in the zodiac, each mansion being 13degrees (the average daily travel of the moon).

so if you start at 0 aries and keep on adding 13, you get 0, 13, 26 as sensitive points. then into taurus a fixed sign, you get 9 and 21, then into gemini a mutable sign, you get 4 and 17, and then back to 0, 13 and 26 again.

i got this info from "the only way to learn astrology vol2" by marion d march and joan mcevers.

Hi Milkway,

Just been reading an Astrology book and came across some information on the critical degrees, which you are always asking about. Which I have too because of our shared birthday.

Planets found in degrees zero to nine are physical and relate to the body.

Planets found in degrees 20 to 29 degrees are the spiritual degrees and relate to the spirit.

Degrees "20" and "29" are the most powerful, with "29" relating to the pinnacle of spiritual attunement. Many people with this degree potent in their chart are psychically gifted.

Degrees "0" and "29" are thought to be "critical". The extreme spiritual sensitivity of "29" can make it hard for the subject to adapt to earthly conditions, whereas a "0" is just beginning to adapt. People with planets at "29" degrees rarely lead mundane lives. Trauma often besets them, creating escapism in many forms and especially accidents and suicide; but those who use their gifts positively are able to reach iconic states within their chosen field.

29th degree of any sign is known as the finger of fate. Planets and house cusps which occupy anarectic degrees indicate fundamental issues with which one must deal.

My Arian Sun is at 29'59 degrees, I inherited it from my grandmother.
I can't tell you how it is affecting me, but in relation to what Miss Saturn said, my grandmother was a gifted clairvoyant and could read the future.

Hi. This is what I've found on the critical degrees:

CRITICAL DEGREES
Taken from the Hindu concept of Vedic Astrology, it is believed that there are degrees of a sign at which it is most fortunate to have a planet positioned.

Critical Degrees are derived mathematically by dividing the Zodiac by the Moon's average daily motion. These positions within the Houses are known as the Lunar Mansions.

The Cardinal Signs -- Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn -- can smile if there's a planet in their birth chart positioned at 0, 13 or 26 degrees.

The Fixed Signs -- Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius -- will be happy to see a planet sitting at 9 or 21 degrees.

The rest of the Signs are Mutable; Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are quite fortunate to find a planet in their natal chart hovering at 4 or 17 degrees.
__________________________________________________ ___________
Max Heindel said that, "When a planet is within orb of 3 degrees of these critical points it exercises a much stronger influence in the life than it would otherwise. Therefore, students will also do well to remember this and should a planet be in a sign of fall or detriment, but in a critical degree, it is thereby strengthened and will do more good or bad according to its native on the aspect it has. On the other hand, if a planet is in its exaltation sign, highly elevated and in a critical degree, its aspects will be exceedingly powerful and make themselves felt much more in the life than would otherwise be the case.
__________________________________________________ ___________
Carol Rushman says, "When I see planets at 27, 28, 29 degrees I make note because this person has the potential to achieve something special. I have had many clients who have planets at these degrees who are very rich."
__________________________________________________ ___________
It is said that planets at the 29th degree of a sign indicate the opportunity in this life to complete the learning of the sign energy, thereby achieving something special.
__________________________________________________ ___________
It is said that a planet at 29 Cancer is the Millionaire's Degree.
__________________________________________________ ___________

Max Heindel said to use a 3-deg orb for the Critical Degree.
The 29th Degree is technically 28:01 to 29 degrees, but using a 3-degree orb would be 26-29 degrees.
__________________________________________________ ____________

I do have Uranus in Cancer at 29 degrees in H8 cj the Vertex, Cancer on the cusp of H8, Uranus the ruler of my Moon, which is in H2 at 20+, the critical degree, so a mutual reception. Uranus is accidentally exalted in H8 as is the Moon in H2 (exalted or something - Moon in H2 is like Moon in Taurus). Anyway, my finances have gone way up to more than a million, and way down, then up again. That is the way of Uranus and the Moon in financial houses, though my Uranus does trine Saturn, so gives it some stability. I also have Pluto and Jupiter in H8, so there again is the theme of expansion and retraction, transformation through this house of finance.

I have a transit coming up in 4 years - Jupiter (chart ruler) cj Uranus/IC/PoF/Aries Point (0 Aries) trine natal Uranus/Vertex, with a solar eclipse to natal Uranus. It sounds good financially, but with Uranus, the little Joy Buzzer, you never really know :)

Fun topic.

Rupert Murdoch - Mars 27Can28
Kerry Packer - Pluto 29 Cancer
Bill Gates - Pluto 27 Leo, Jupiter 28 Leo
Oprah - 29 Sag Asc
J. Paul Getty - Part of Fortune 28 Scorpio
Queen of England - Many planets at critical degrees

When you look at famous people's charts, you'll see lots of planets at the critical degree, special placements in their charts, etc.

Also look for these things in progressions.

My Saturn sits retrograde at 29'18 in Cancer. No money yet. I doubt I will ever me a millionaire.

I was reading on astrologyinserbia that the 2nd degree is really important for power. Queen Vic had numerous planets at this degree. I have to find the article.

I have my natal sun at 29'58'' Scorpio

"
"A man reads a book at his desk with several samples of stone placed in front of him."
Intelligent, studious, and loyal character. Success and fame can be achieved in sciences, literature, architecture, or economics. Owing to one's benevolence, honesty, and steadfastness, one attracts many friends. This degree often indicates a high level of erudition. There is a possible danger of accidents, explosions, or contamination."

The interpretation for the degree above is somewhat true to me,
I can testify that I feel the force and intensity of my sun -- but I do have mars and pluto in scorpio as well so who knows?

1. Mercury in Pisces 27 d (exactly conjunct MC, 27th degree mutuable, within 3 of 0 Cardinal)

2. Venus in Pisces 16 d (exalted, within 1 d of 17 mutuable)

3. Cancer Rising 27 d (27 degree, within 1 degree of Cardinal 26)

4. Virgo Moon 17 d (within 1 degree of 17 mutuable)

5. Pluto 9 d (exact conjunction of 9 d fixed, only planet in fixed sign)

I don't know exactly how to consider these special degrees with my placements, though I'm especially interested in debilitated, accidental dignified and special-degree-fortified Mercury in Pisces...:w00t:

Great topic. My Moon in Aries is at 29 degree 47 minutes. My chart is of the bucket shape, with my Moon forming the handle part (sole planet on one side of the chart). My Moon is also in 2 grand trines (Venus, Mars, and Neptune). Very interesting...

Also, I was reading that there's some debate on whether or not you can classify a particular moon sign as having "cusp status" if it's located close to another sign. I strongly believe that Moon signs can indeed have qualities of both signs. If I was born exactly 25 minutes later, I would have been a Taurus Moon, and I have qualities of both Aries and Taurus emotionally: persistence, impulsiveness, stubbornness, capable of very long and potent emotional displays, etc.

Hi there, minor comment so I don't deviate too far from the topic, but just to add a little spice to the conversation, I have a book from a very good British astrologer Jonathan Cainer, and in it he says that the cusp idea of mixing qualities is basically what astrologers said, when lacking the technology and information we have today. He said it's pretty much nonsense.

I can see this being mirrored as Hellenistic astrology is being decoded these days, and 'add on' habits and ideas which 'don't belong' are being 'cleaned up'. This provides good debate!

Woah!Good to find this thread.

About Cardinals huh?I have my Mars in Capricorn in 13 degrees if you can help me in any way to explain this, also my ascendant is in capricorn 13 degrees.

Someone said about 29 degrees=psychically gifted.A friend of mine has it and I would say she kinda relates to that.

So any explanation about my Mars in capricorn 13 degrees.Since it seems most focused here on commenting about degrees from 20 to 29 mostly.

Oh I forgot telling you that I have Jupiter in 0 degree of Libra (cardinal sign)- so it's in a critical degree.

Look to the describtion of 0 degree of Libra, according to this:

"A man with a pistol in each hand walks in a barren land, unaware that he is followed by a man holding a sword."
Independent, assertive, and affectionate character. There is an overwhelming tendency to be over-protective with family members. Self-righteousness may lead to dangerous situations of violence with danger of severe physical and psychological injuries. This degree indicates a strong taste for the practice of weapons, and the possibility to excel in all martial arts. It also endows with the gift for healing animals, especially horses, and often describes an excellent veterinary specialist. :innocent:

Hey Frag, just out of curiosity...where do you find such detailed interpretations for the Sabian Symbols? Is that in a book, or is there an online site that has that description? All the sites I'm seeing have only the one sentence metaphorical descriptions in quotes.

29 Gem Mars

20 deg Taurus Sun, Hades (conj to 21 deg)

8 deg Aqua Vertex

29 degree Cap North Node

I have some random questions relating to this. My Venus is at 13 Cancer 42, is that therefore considered 13 degrees of Cancer or rather 14 degrees and should I be reading the Sabian Symbol for 13 or 14 Cancer or both? Also, my Moon is at 8 Taurus 26, does that qualify as being 9* and thus critical? I didn't realize until I read this thread that there was an orb influence with critical degress, I was under the impression that the planets had to be at exact degrees? Any insight would me much appreciated!

Hi Milkway,

Just been reading an Astrology book and came across some information on the critical degrees, which you are always asking about. Which I have too because of our shared birthday.

I was reading about the decantes and how they can be interpreted from an esoteric point of view wherein they relate to the mind, body, and spirit.

Planets found in degrees zero to nine are physical and relate to the body.

Planets found in degrees ten to nineteen are mental and relate to the mind.

Miss S

Thx for providing an esoteric perspective on these critical degrees. It really fits me! Especially planets on the 29th!

00 degree capricorn moon, Oh my gosh that was a hard time definetly about adapting and valuing the things i have in life (2nd house). I went to jail and moved out of my moms because we were having bad problems when I had just turned 18. 6 Gemini Sun (2 degrees off mutable)
20 Gemini Venus (3 degrees off mutable)
24 Taurus Mars (3 degrees off fixed)
3 Libra Saturn (3 degrees off cardinal)
28 Scorpio Uranus (near 29 critical degree)

I read this online somewhere as well. I have Sun @ 29 deg Sag and Venus @ 29 degree Capricorn. My Neptune is @ 20 deg Sagittarius.

Planets from 20-29 deg not mentioned already are: Saturn, Pluto and Uranus. As well as my AC/DC axis.

Planets between 10-19 for me are: jupiter, mars and mercury.

Planets 0-9: Moon and NN (although not a planet, still important.)

My chiron is @ 9 deg Taurus, fixed sign.

Planets found in degrees zero to nine are physical and relate to the body.
I have Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn in early degrees. I actually do experience those planetary energies in the most concrete/physical way.

Planets found in degrees 20 to 29 degrees are the spiritual degrees and relate to the spirit.
All my other planets are in late degrees: Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto

Degrees "20" and "29" are the most powerful, with "29" relating to the pinnacle of spiritual attunement. Many people with this degree potent in their chart are psychically gifted.
I have 20 Gemini Venus and 29 Gemini Mercury. Although I'm not sure that I would be a "psychic," I am quite intuitive and can pick up on things that are below the surface and I'm usually spot on when deciphering people's personality with little exposure to them (thankfully).

I have 0 Libra Jupiter in the 1st house and 29 Gemini Mercury in the 9th house.

Most of the time, as far as Jupiter/luck goes, I do feel like I am starting something, embarking on a new adventure and staking new ground. I always look something that's not well known or hoping to discover something new. I know that I'm a very lucky person.

For Mercury, often times I end up finishing whatever I come across and getting "the last word" was something of the utmost importance to me (but not anymore). I do escape into my mind quite often because the world is too stupid 9/10 of times and it exhausts me to be constantly exposed stupidity. Puzzles and games are a great source of entertainment for me but also, very essential to my sanity. I use to teach classes at the university level and I found that to be very fulfilling, but I couldn't imagine myself staying in academia for very long. Looking back on it, I probably should have stayed and been a lecturer because that was probably the one area that got me the most respect and gave me rewarding feelings to teach and train minds to think for themselves (even though I would get in trouble with authority).
