View Full Version : A new role at work - can I do it?

To set the background: I'm a trainee nurse in a nursing home. I am 2 months into my traineeship. I believe the reason I am so competent so early is because of the exceptional way my supervisor has taught me.
------

My supervisor is leaving next week, which leaves my team without a team leader. As the next most qualified person on the team, I will take over a lot of her responsibilities. A new girl will join our team, but she is not qualified and rather new to the job in general, so I imagine I will have to teach her a few things.

The team is only small, with a total of three people including myself. My supervisor has taught me well, so I'm fairly certain I can handle the tasks I will now have to do. I just wonder if I can do it without her guidance. There is a security in knowing she is there to fix mistakes, to prompt me when I forget things and she always knows how to handle any situation.

I'm mainly concerned about how I will be without her there to guide me (wether I can stand on my own two feet) and without the security of having her nearby.

I also wonder if my chart can tell me whether or not I am suited to this unofficial leadership role? Do I have the right qualities? Can I balance leadership with teamwork? Will I be successful at passing my skills on to the new girl?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
