As I understand progressions are really just an 'alternative' transits. Traditional transits are day-for-a-day while progressions are day-for-a-year.
So do transits of a progression have any effect? For example, my progressed Sun is now at 3Lib which will take a square from transitting Pluto.

Your natal chart is like a photograph as unique as your fingerprint, BUT the 10planets in the sky have not stayed where they were in your natal chart, they have all moved. Predictive astrology is mostly maths where those 10planets are now and the mathematical aspects they make to your natal charts ie: 180'=opposition, 90'=square, 60'=sextile and 120'=trine.
So your personality, grows, develops, changes, matures as we get older, this is reflected by your sun sign changing from it's natal position to the next sign along, so does your Asc and MC sign change. In fact from sun to mars espec are important, as the outer planets really don't move much, using a 'day for a year' secondary progressions.
If you want to research more into Secondary progressions try here

Therefore, progressions are an internal evolution and yes transits work to progressed planets to, but the most important are from sun - mars....
Transits
astro.com has fee six month transit forecast plus when you get into Extended chart selection, look at the three tabs after calculating a chart under ‘method’ default is circular wheels (on left), middle is special charts and in their you get graphic ephemeris 1yr (or 5years) with natal = transits for 1yr and lots more. BUT you first must learn or memorise the 'glyphs' ie: shorthand for recognising what these maps/graphics mean.
For example when you post or reply to a chart the 'smilies' to the right and just under them [more] if you click on there it will bring up a whole loads of 'glyphs' Mercury:mercury: Uranus :uranus:conjunction:conjunct: (+or - 8') trine:trine: aspect 120' :libra:Libra

Now it's more important to focus on transits from Jupiter to Pluto and these planets when aspecting something in your natal chart 'set off' the difficult or nice 'aspects - potential - problems' that your chart expresses. By that I mean if a benefic planet like Jupiter hits/touches/transits your venus, mars or uranus these could be experienced very pleasantly. BUT if your natal venus is afflicted, or badly aspected say conj saturn then jupiter will not has such a good effect. It all depends on how the natal planet is 'aspected'
As I understand progressions are really just an 'alternative' transits. Traditional transits are day-for-a-day while progressions are day-for-a-year.
I view the natal chart as showing all the astrological lessons we are learning throughout our lifetime; the day-for-a-year progressed chart as those lessons we are focused upon for a 12 month period and transits as triggering physical events which provide "learning through experience" of one specific aspect of a lesson......Thus, your natal Sun in Leo/4th (equal house) is learning to express personal power; it's progression to Libra/6th focuses this learning on everyday relationships and the transitting square from Pluto in Capricorn/8th will (probably) bring clashes with those having hierarchical power/authority......focusing natal Sun on the specific issue of personal vs institutional power, through your daily work (Leo/6th)......(And transitting Saturn is then ready to teach you about the contribution that "controlled communications" (natal Saturn Gemini/2nd) at work (progressed Sun/transit Saturn in Libra/6th) can make to personal power (natal Sun in Leo/5th)
So do transits of a progression have any effect?
Yes......as A50 explains......but, the lesson will always involve one of those contained in the natal chart.

In predictive astrology you can certainly use aspects from transit to progressed charts. The transit is a trigger of what the progression indicates. The progressed natal planet is being activated, and what ever it promises in the natal chart will then become evident. However, the effect will be greater if there is also an aspect to the natal chart itself. Transits by themselves are very weak and will often pass without notice. They allow accurate timing of events.
Day-for-a-year progressions work extremely well in predictive work inspite of being a modern method. I first read of its use in the nineteenth century, but have not yet found who first used it. Placidus first proposed the use of progressions in the zodiac for prediction, but he used a method like tertiary progressions which no other astrologer seems to have used. Evangeline Adams, a famous predictive astrologer, used this method. She began her astrology practice in New York when her progressed and natal planets formed their most favorable alignment.

Nice description, for me I would say external 'events' must be seen by transits, progressions or Solar arcs to Angles ie: Asc/Desc & MC/IC most other times these events are 'internal psychological matters as in between the ears'

Thanks everybody for the replies. I'm digging through some of A50s links. EJ, there's certainly a lot going on in my head about power/authority etc.
I first read of its use in the nineteenth century
I'm hoping that doesn't mean you're over 109 years old

EJ ... you know what that's a very good description of where I'm at with my job. I'm currently working as a compliance officer at an organisation where everybody looks to me to set our organisation's policy. I've had a few power struggles this year but the real challenge has been about me learning to be confident about what I'm telling people. My neptune square still lets me down from time to time but I'm getting there slowly but surely ...
