What's the meaning of a significator conjunct the south node? How is it interpreted? Malefic?

Yup, usually. From Lilly:
The Lord of the ascendant or the Moon with the Head or Tail of the Dragon, brings damage to the Question propounded; see in what house they are in , and receive signification from thence. CA301

hmm, brings damage to the question? I'm not sure how that's meant. Obviously I am talking about Mercury....the horary chart I cast has Mercury as the quesited in the 11th house. Damage to hopes and wishes?

Thanks Joseph for all the information.
I asked a question about my job/boss earlier today. The boss was signified by Mercury in Cancer in my 11th house conjunct the south node and combust the Sun.
I'll comment more tomorrow or post the chart, quite tired at the moment.
