Hello Everyone

I recently read a good book entitled "Astrology for Beginners: A Simple Way to Read Your Chart" and I think it fills a necessary void. It shows you how to to read your birth chart without having to learn all the intricacies of astrology. It gives you lots of interpretive material including the meaning of your chart pattern - something few books even go into.

When I first discovered astrology I wanted to understand my own birth chart but I really didn't want to undertake a serious study of astrology. While there were plenty of books teaching in-depth astrology, there was nothing that simply explained the birth chart. Well now there is. The publisher is Llewellyn and the author is Hampar.

Thanks for the book recommendation! While there hasn't been a BOOK that explained the basics of astrology without a lot of astrology jargon, there has been a WEBSITE that explained these basics. And it has a lot fewer pages! :rotflmao:

Pat, I am one of those people who believes that a real grasp of astrology does require a lot of study. Tim's site is super. There are other introductory books out there [my favourite is Steven Forrest, The Inner Sky] and web sites.

I think a real grasp of astrology is akin to majoring in a subject at university--and then there is "graduate" level work beyond. But I do think that "Astrology 101" books and websites put people a giant step ahead of popular sun-sign astrology, or simply having our charts read by the experts, without having any idea as to how they derived their interpretations.

Best wishes for your astrological journey, W.

Thank you to all who commented.

The book I am recommending - "Astrology for Beginners: a Simple Way to Read Your Chart" is one of those rare books that offers the reader an introduction to understanding the birth chart as opposed to learning the complex subject of astrology. It does this by introducing interpretive techniques that are easily applied. The publisher has even included a 'free birth chart' offer if you send in the form at the back of the book.

It's a good thing .....

Hi Pat
I bought this book for my daughter a few months ago. It is quite informative and an easy read. It includes the chart patterns which I find so helpful and which many books do not even go into. It is easy to find your own chart pattern because the author gives examples in every group. It also shows you how to find your career planet(s) and there is an entire section on how to identify your career choices based on this technique. A very nice book for anyone interested in grasping the basics of the birth chart without investing a great deal of time to learn this fine art.

Hello astrologybuff

So nice to get some feedback about this book - glad you liked it as much as I did. It gives so much helpful information and at the same time manages to avoid all the tedious jargon.

Hi everyone

Here is an excerpt from "Astrology for Beginners: A Simple Way to Read Your Chart" on Oprah Winfrey's chart pattern. Her horoscope is also illustrated in the book.

"Oprah Winfrey has a Locomotive chart pattern. Someone with this pattern may be described as a self-driving individual whose persistence often results in great accomplishments. This often is complemented by a strong need to solve problems and to make a contribution to society as a whole. The personality can reflect an innate power to achieve one's goals, so this pattern usually is associated with executive ambition. Sometimes a strong desire to succeed can result in a rebellious nature. The person with this pattern usually is motivated by external factors associated with the lead planet in the pattern. To locate the lead planet, place your finger in the empty trine and move it counterclockwise. The first planet you see is the lead planet."

"The first thing you notice when you look at your horoscope wheel is that the planets are dispersed in such a way as to form a distinct pattern. This pattern has meaning in the broadest sense, defining the way you approach life. It offers a whole view of your being that is necessary before you begin the process of defining all its parts. In selecting which pattern is closest to your own, use only the ten planets. Your horoscope may not fit precisely into one specific pattern. In that case, look for the signature in each chart pattern that is closest to your own."
