I have an old 3 volume set of astrology books by William W. Whitman that are the best I have ever read for interpreting my chart. According to him, my Saturn in the 10th house in opposition to Mercury and Mars in my fourth signifies trouble in the family. The mother is much older, cruel, with an inability to love. There is a tendency toward an unloving early home life, and this person should leave the parent's house as soon as possible. Much tension at home.
I was amazed, because all of those things perfectly describe my situation. Attached is my chart if you want to check it out.

well, generally any tension or malefics involving 4th or/and 10th house would somehow relate to family issues, but I think family issues go beyond chart readings - they might be considered somewhat universal, no? I mean just about everyone has something to resolve within the family and go from there.
4th house is our roots, is where we come from and upon which we built ourselves on.
Saturn opposing Mars is generally a difficult aspect, and being 4th and 10th houses are influenced by it, no wonder there was tension.
Mars in 4th could be potential danger in home, aggression, I've seen many war refugees who had to leave their homes having Mars there or Mars as a ruler of 4th house. Restlessness, quarrels in home life are some easier alternatives. Conjoined with Mercury, loud fights, yelling, verbal agression...
Saturn in 10th on the other hand might bring you much authority thru your career.

Hi Hermetic,
Thanks for the insights. Yeah, my early life situation was kind of extreme, and that is totally reflected in my chart. Also, mars and saturn, aside from being opposed to each other, are both also opposed to Uranus in my first house. I was always eccentric, outspoken, and strong willed- charachter traits that both made my early home life more difficult by inflaming the anger of an abusive and domineering parent, but also helped me to pull through. Is there a special term for three planets that are all in opposition to one another?

I guess you mean they are squared to Uranus in the 1st - that would be a T-cross formation, you are right, this Uranus is the outlet for the tension created by Mars and Saturn

I misspoke when I said Uranus was opposed. It is actually squared. So, when we're looking at family situation, we can look at the fourth, tenth, sometimes fifth if children are concerned, and any aspects connected with these houses. I'm seeing in my chart that the ruler of my tenth house is in my fourth, and the ruler of my fourth is also in the fourth-that seems to put emphasis on my fourth, but beyond that I'm not sure how to interpret it.

Your natal chart didn't upload, astro.com is very popular but you would need to go to Extended chart selection and reduce ratio to 63%, when looking at chart then right mouse click and save to hard drive, then upload here.
Mercury conj mars and mercury square Uranus are both challenging aspects suggests argumentative, errractic thoughts and speach, which takes maturity to overcome. There are some great threads on this forum for Uranus aspects that you may identify with.

agreed...I have a retrograde saturn in aries conjunct the IC, opposite mercury / venus conjunct the MC
My early home was not good, my dad died the day I was born, my mum was abusive, took drugs and left me in the care of people that sexually abused me. My mother stabbed me in the shoulder when I was 15 and when the blood seeped through my school uniform I had the welfare on my doorstep that night....I was no angel either I learn't that issues got resolved by lots of yelling and a good fight until blood was shed.
I left home at 16 and never once considered going back. I'm 40 and my advice to anyone it that sort of family situation is to get out of there !
