When planets change direction in a progressed chart, it often signals events or changes in attitudes/beliefs. They're more powerful when go retrograde, direct or stationary conjunct to a natal planet, angle or cusp. One way to look at it is just applying the energy differently.
For example, when Jupiter (ruler of the 2nd) went direct conjunct natal Venus in the 8th, I started a business (I wasn't into astrology then). When Venus when retrograde conjunct natal Pluto in the 10th I was hired as a varsity football coach. When Mercury went retrograde conjunct natal Pluto, I got a lead role in my first high school play. When Mercury, Mars, and Uranus (twice) conjuncted Jupiter, I quit my job (to start a business), got laid off from a job, got divorced, moved.
You can see a lot of events, just by watching your progessed planets chaning directions.
