Hi Tootsie,
I would think yes, this is significant...Is the critical degree *29*? If so, it usually indicates *something is about to change*.

Hi Lillyjgc and tootsie, yeah 29 and 00 degrees are meant to be the critical degrees... I'm not completely sure as to their implications... always thought of the 30th degree as a kind of detrimental degree, critical as in at the end of its tether... But there is no traditional text which says this is there? I was mistaken in my interpretation, I guess it requires a bit more study and some examples.
I guess "critical" in this sense makes it more important, but not unfortunate. Unless I'm mistaken, I hope not, just because they are the beginning and the end of the sign doesn't mean that they don't work...
Does anyone have anything more that they can say... do planets at 29-30 degrees face any danger or debility?

I wouldn't think so because the critical degrees are not the last degree of the Signs. They're actually tied to the Lunar Mansions which are based upon the mean daily motion of Luna around the Zodiac. These degrees are "Critical" because they coincide with the ending and beginnings of the Lunar mansions and thus are the "doorways" of different significations.
I've heard that these change by just a little bit every year, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Anyway, the critical degrees are 19° Aries, 2° Taurus, 14° Taurus, 27° Taurus, 10° Gemini, 23° Gemini, 6° Cancer, 19° Cancer, 2° Leo, 14° Leo, 27° Leo, 10° Virgo, 23° Virgo, 6° Libra, 19° Libra, 2° Scorpio, 14° Scorpio, 27° Scorpio, 10° Sagittarius, 23° Sagittarius, 6° Capricorn, 19° Capricorn, 2° Aquarius, 14° Aquarius, 27° Aquarius, 10° Pisces, 23° Pisces, and 6° Aries. Twenty-eight in all and you notice none of them coorespond with the final degree of a Sign. I believe that's a modern misunderstanding, or perhaps the newer system of critical degrees evolved ignorantly of the previous. Who knows.

Hi Kai,
I'm pretty sure it was in traditional astrology that the 29th degree of any sign was considered a *critical degree*...(but I *might* be mistaken)...This was in addition to the critical degrees of the *signs*...I havent studied *modern horary* so I'm pretty sure I picked up that info in a trad. text...I might go have a look and see if I can find out where that was....;) .

Ok.It came from Ivy Goldstein-Jacobson. I can't locate any reference to it in Christian Astrology though except in relation to the ascendant degree in horary...

But its referred to at this link.: Bethem's Centiloquium Englished.
22. A planet in the last degree of a sign is as one falling from his estate.
So I presume it is a traditional technique, maybe based on Greek astrology originally.
Cheers.

Other collections of authors' aphorisms don't discuss this, though.

Hi,
Different texts say different things, the lunar mansions degrees are interesting, as are the very last and first degrees of signs. I was just wondering if anyone had any examples of a certain degree corelating with something significant - i.e. a planet at 29 degrees or at one of the Lunar Mansion critical degrees, not afflicted in too big a way, but coinciding with events which can really show us that the degree is detrimmental or beneficial or neither of the two but exemplified in some sort of way... regardless of the texts. Is there any evidence in any of your chart readings? :)

That may be true, but any text that labels the last degrees of a Sign as "critical" are mistaken. Critical degrees are not the same as late degrees.
Planets in late degrees in horary relate to a change in the near future. For example, if Mercury is a significator and is at 29° Leo, it suggests the situation is soon going to greatly improve as Mercury is about to move from the Sign of Leo (peregrine) to the Sign of Virgo (domicile and exaltation) so its state is going to greatly improve, and so too will the situation Mercury is representing.
That's late degrees, not critical degrees.
Planets at critical degrees are significant of a person or situation that is in a "crisis" mode and debilitated, usually indicative of someone caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. I can remember one chart I've seen somewhere (I can't remember where right now) that had the Moon on a critical degree, she was besieged as well, the situation didn't turn out well, even though Luna was in domicile.
That's critical degrees, not late degree.
