View Full Version : Sense of humour

Can you tell generally the sense of humour of a person astrologically.

Here is some information on humour from wikipedia:

Humour or humor is the tendency of particular images, stories or situations to provoke laughter (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/wiki/Laughter) and provide amusement (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/wiki/Amusement). Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. Yet, people of all ages and cultures respond to humour and most people share a common sense of humour.

Sense of humour is the ability to experience humour, although the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends on a host of variables (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/wiki/Variable), including geographical location (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/wiki/Geographical_location), culture (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/wiki/Culture), maturity, level of education (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/wiki/Education), intelligence, and context (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/context). For example, young children may possibly favour slapstick (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/wiki/Slapstick), such as Punch and Judy (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/wiki/Punch_and_Judy) puppet shows or cartoons (e.g. Tom and Jerry (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/wiki/Tom_and_Jerry)[COLOR=black]).

I was thinking what types of things I find funny or my favourite comedian's.

I like most jokes although I take myself too seriously (Sun/Saturn) I can find things funny that other people don't.

I think some sense of humours are offbeat strange, some people think everything is funny and don't take nothing seriously. I am not sure what planets sign indicate humour apart from Jupiter really. Some people like sarcastic humour, black humour. I don't really like rude jokes, I wasn't a big fan of American pie. But others like the movies (like my partner).

I am not sure what to look for, any help appreciated :) .

What rules humour astrologically.
Or does the genral chart indicate the sense of humor

Oh my gosh you and I would totally get eachother! I love those movies and I get humor that others dont find funny. Life has such quirky things about it, that I find humor in almost anything, even life's most nastiest subjects.

I find EVERYTHING funny, I laugh at everything. I really do. lol. Sun conjunct Jupiter in Taurus perhaps? and sextile asc. and Sag. moon. But.. over-all I find physical facial expression humour hilarouis, for example, Conan O'brian and Jim Carrey.

HI Steph,

I find laughing at some of life's harder struggles, lightens it up a little.

Hi alliewar,

I like Jim Carry as well. I will have to have a look at his chart if I come across it. Sometimes he seems really hyper do you think he is like this all the time.

I was watching this ghost video before it made me laugh, it's very hard to believe it is real. Probably because I have seen so many. Lots of people fake ghost video's all the time. There could be genuine ones but with so many fakes it is hard to tell. I don't understand why there would be ghosts here anyway. You can feel a presence when someone dies or they visit you. I am not sure if you get haunted or anything but my mother claims she has been in a haunted house where a man died.

Don't watch vid if your easily scared.

I have gone slightly off topic, I will look for Carrey's chart :) .

Not overly sure on birth time with astrotheme. But Jim Carrey has Sun in Capricorn conjunct Saturn. I remember reading in Sue Tompkins book at the end of the chapter on the Sun/Saturn aspect that it was common in the charts of comedians.

By Sue Tompkins from the excellent Aspects in astrology:

Sun - Saturn may as I have suggested take itself rather seriously but these contacts are quite common in the charts of comedians, who amongst other things have to have a good sense of timing. Examples include Lucille Ball and Eric Morecambe. I have found the conjunction aspect is common in the charts of clowns. Amongst other things, clowns are protecting themselves by wearing masks. For most of us, our skin is our physical defence, the barrier between us and the outside world..

And what was Jim Carreys most famous role _ The mask. Wow astrology keeps on amazing me, he is perfect for the role  .

What type of sun saturn would be common?
I have sun square saturn...
I would have to say that people think I am wierd and laugh at me all of the time, not sure if that is a good thing however!
I would have to say that comedy is very important when I am looking for friends and relationships...I place a high importance on that....but not knock knock funny, I am talking like dirty funny....
Like I am in the medical field and I find anal tubes hilarious....I think KY jelly is a great invention for jokes....
Stuff like that...
Weird I know!

Mercury sign and placement has a lot to do with the sense of humour, as it rules all things communicative; the processing as well as the production/performance.

I have Sun trine Saturn, and a 12th house Mercury in Capricorn. My humour is very dry and can be pretty subtle (but not sarcastic; I leave that to my Mercury in Scorpio friends:D ). It's something that gets me in trouble with my American compatriots, many of whom don't understand that I am joking. They give me puzzled, hurt looks, and then I have to explain to them what my joke was, which ruins it.

I get along quite well in England, however, where dry humour is common. I always liked British comedy, even as a kid.

They say that you know you are fluent in a second language if you can make jokes in it.

Checked the chart of Rowan Atkinson (6th Jan 1955, birth time n/a, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne) Another Capricorn, who also has Saturn aspecting his Sun & Mer (sextile). Also has a very active Ura- aspecting his Mars, Mer, Jup, Nep and Chiron

I love the Cap/Saturn smart humour, sarcastic with great observations. I am crazy about The Simpsons, and was hooked on Seinfeld. Aquarius7000 - I love Rowan Atkinson and followed Mr. Bean & The Blackadder piously.

On the other hand I despise half-humour or silly humour.... I never got what people find so funny in Friends or "Everybody loves raymond". I find it very irritating :60:

I used to like Mr. Bean; loved Ab Fab, but most especially loved, loved, loved 'Little Britain', which seems to polarize people into love it/hate it camps. It was truly dreadful; took the mickey out of everyone you really shouldn't take the mickey out of, but lordy was it funny....:38: I never liked 'Friends'-type humour either; I had to do an ethnography on it for one of my anthropology classes...the whole first season of Friends in three weeks' watching. Oh my.

I look for Gemini, Jupiter in Gemini are a gas, then for Mercury, the 3rd house. I have a client with Pisces Sun and Gemini rising. Once these two kick in together, it's laugh city.... Piscean imagination mixed with Gemini wit... what a combo.

Yes, 'Everbody loves Raymond' - often wondered why myself ;)
Btw, going off topic again briefly - if you fancy some British 'exaggerated' humour, have a go at 'Keeping up Appearances', and you'll be a laugh a minute. Patricia Routledge (does the lead role) is a classy actress.

Anyways, astrologically speaking, I think people with strong Ura-Mer aspects might also have a strange sense of humour at times. Found this interesting bit on the web:

Mercury in Aspect to Uranus: Jesters and Disturbers
Although Uranus-Mercury and Saturn-Mercury combinations tend to share a commonality in that both love to critique and judge, there the commonalty ends. Whereas the Saturn-Mercury individual tends to present their case through well-developed logic and thorough homework, the Uranus-Mercury individual tends to prod and provoke their opponents through wit, sarcasm, humor, and shock tactics. The Uranus-Mercury interface is often associated with the clown or jester that mocks human hypocrisy, shortcomings, and untruths. Often brilliant and irreverent, the Mercury-Uranus individual often disturbs and shocks us into new states of awareness through radical and illuminating discourse. Whatever the case may be, the Uranus-Mercury individual is inevitably different, unique, and wonderfully bright. :)

I do not have Mer in direct aspect to Ura, but, as an Aqu Sun (with liberated spirit:)), I feel the Ura-Mer at work in my system quite profoundly at times. Attribute this to my Ura in 3 (3=Gem), and 11-H in Gem, with Sat sitting in it. So, that's where all the indirect Ura-Mer connections are with a tinge of Saturn. I quite like to tickle the upper-story of my dialogue-partner hoping that he'll tickle mine in return. Love mental-agility. Nothing like a big dose of laughter and some quick wit.:p
I have to add though that I don't really relish malicious humour or being provocative just for the heck of it.:34:

so what aspects show a person who cant take a joke??????????? (there are few charts of people on this forum that I would LOVE to look at, when trying to look at this question......hehehe)I once read a lovely saying somewhere: A man's character can be known by what he laughs at :D

In answer to your question, I don't want to say that water signs (or those with water emphasized in their charts) cannot take a joke, but certainly they can be a bit hypersensitive about things or tend to take things personally at times. However, Leo-emphasized charts can also be quite sensitive esp if they feel that 'the joke' was in some way intended to bruise their ego ;). Virgo-emphasis can also make the native quite touchy and critical about things (is said esp of Lunar-Virgos).

Caps can be quite sarcastic themselves, but, as receivers, might be inclined to take things too seriously (more like-look for logic even in a joke).

However, the above doesn't have to hold good simply if a person has his/her Sun in say a Water sign or say in Cap; it's more the planetary emphasis of a sign in a chart (accentuation of water and earth- with regard to hypersensitivity or being critical by nature ). Just my opinion

Funny, isn't it :p

LOL!:p

I have the Mercury/Uranus square. Theyprod and provoke their opponents through wit, sarcasm, humor, and shock tactics. Whatever the case may be, the Uranus-Mercury individual is inevitably different, unique, and wonderfully bright.Oh, yes. That's me. WONDERFULLY bright! And brilliant and irreverent!;)

Seriously, though, I used to operate with 'blunt-force trauma' tactics when I was much younger; stuff would pop out of my mouth unbidden and really hurt people's feelings. I got a good grip on it [finally!!] after my Saturn Return; it took me that long to learn to leave my mouth closed while my brain processed and analysed what it wanted me to say! "Is it a good idea to say that, Archergirl? No, probably not."

Gemini humour? Nah. Doesn't do it for me. Mr. Archergirl is a SEXTUPLE Gemini (Gemini Ascendant, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and North Node!!)). He gets his sense of humour from his dad, who is also a Gemini. They think they're being 'witty' or 'charming', when they're actually being prats.:p His dad in particular drives me nuts, because he's so very UNfunny. Mr. Archergirl is actually very funny, but usually unintentionally. He's never funny when he's trying to be.

I also think Capricorns are very funny; my closest friend is a Capricorn (like me she has a Capricorn Mercury and Aquarius rising), and I find her hilarious. Very dry, but with a slightly kooky streak, probably due to the Aquarius influence.

In fact, the person I found the funniest, ever, was an Aquarius with Mercury also in Aquarius; he was totally random and could be quite vicious (he had a Scorpio Mars), but my goodness did he make me laugh. Mostly out of shock.

Ahhhh...so that's where I get that from..I've got Mercury trine Uranus and Merc in Aries. People either think I'm really funny and get it, or they miss it completely...oftentimes I offend without meaning to as well. Depends on the company.
I've got a ton of Gemini friends, and man oh man are they witty and clever, but never would I say they were 'funny'. In fact, I have never, ever seen any of them rolling on the floor busting a gut. They giggle a bit sometimes, but never out and out hilarity. They're hilarious when they're not really trying to be hilarious. Even plumber-builder dude - sun, moon, venus, merc and mars all in Gemini - and boy was he witty and clever, and prided himself on his witty and astute observations (many of which I thought were useless and pointless trivia) but he didn't seem to smile a whole lot. I thought he was funny when he wasn't trying to be, but I'd prefer to have someone who can crack up with me. Even better, I like it when I can crack someone else up.
I find Saggies to be hilarious! My girlfriend has Sun, Venus, and Mars in Sag in the 12th and she will laugh at absolutely anything, and we all laugh with her. Best sense of humour I've ever encountered. She has had me on the floor laughing and crying at the same time.

I also find Pisces rising...and sometimes Pisces Suns...to be really funny too, They're good at spoonerisms...sort of a play on words. A different kind of funny, but still.

I laugh at myself and some stupid humorous situations in life. Very rarely normal jokes make me laugh and I do not really enjoy most of the comedic movies, cause their jokes are "too stupid and obvious". I love humour that is not intended to be funny, I love laughing at life, at circumstances, at things that should not be laughed about, but somehow they are funny to me. :P I like to laugh at things that most people find "normal", I like to make normal things seen as wacky and odd. I am also very sarcastic, but usually about myself. :D

Example: I HATE Jim Carrey. I love many stand up comedians. If I watch a comedic movie, usually the places I laugh, are something that reminds of some things that I do, that I myself find funny. :P

I have Sun, Moon and Mercury in Capricorn square Jupiter in Aries and also Jupiter sextile Venus. I have also heard that Moon sign could represent the humour we have and what we find funny. I have Moon in Cancer, opposing Neptune and Mercury. I also have Neptune on Mc. :) Jupiter in 12th, Uranus and Saturn in 9th.

So, wacky, not obvious, intelligent, sarcastic, but somehow positive humour about taboo things, is for me. :)

(ps. It is so hard to explain humour! Really! Harder than talk about feelings in general, cause humour is so sensitive are somehow!)

I think over-sensitivity is the contrast of a sense of humour, so excessive Neptunic influence?

I think there might be some logic to that. Heavily Neptune-influenced folk, from what I've seen, appear to be inordinately thin-skinned...especially if there are Neptune-Mars aspects.

what kind of aspects.....:D

archergirl
06-18-2008, 10:04 PM
Well, speaking only from my experiences, Neptune opposing Mars, for example, often makes people deeply unsure of themselves in many ways, as does Neptune square Mars; and thin-skinned-ness is the most obvious manifestation of this: if you are unsure of yourself, how can you possibly 'take a joke' from someone else? (I have Mars square Neptune, btw...something I've had to do a great deal of work on! Thankfully I have other stronger aspects that help me override this most of the time). The other Mars/Neptune aspects (sextile, trine) are somewhat 'softer' than this: it can make people shy or avoidant of conflict whenever possible, to the point of 'taking a lot of sh:mad: t' from people because of it.

AG:)

Ebenia

I think over-sensitivity is the contrast of a sense of humour, so excessive Neptunic influence?

This could be true with some neptune aspects, BUT I would say that actually being funny, is all about being sensitive - cause jokes only work if you say them at the right time at the right moment. You cannot be funny, if you cannot read other peoples emotions at all - then you will get this syndrome of usually older men, who tell very stupid jokes on very wrong moment (ex. someone has died  ). I am very Neptunian person, but I believe still my self to be quite funny and people usually characterize me as one. I am very sensitive, but I am still confident about my self.

But I am greatly agreeing with Archergirl about Mars-Neptune aspects. I have one friend, who has a square between Mars and Neptune and being too serious is her problem.

aquarius7000
06-19-2008, 12:25 PM
I think most of us can be/ are funny - as the activator/ sender; the problem lies in being the receiver and being able to take a joke yourself - that's where hypersensitivity steps in.

I have saturn conjunct my sun like jim carey. And can relate to some of the previous posts about it. Sarcasim is deffenity a saturn trait. Not to toot my own horn but I think I have a good sense of humor. Jim carey also was bi polar. I watched a true hollywood story on him before, and when he used to do stand up at night clubs he would have the whole club hating him. He prolly used the crowd as his ammo for his act. He said he would envoke a whole range of emotions from them pretty much. I would of loved to be there. A couple of things stick out in Jims chart that could add to his humor. First would be his Uranus Conjunct the MC. Being viewed as eccentric by the public. The saturn sun conjunction prolly relating to some of his straight face dry humor and also his jupiter conjunct mercury in aquarius would say ALOT. Jupiter is a jovial planet teaming up with his communication style. I found dumb and dumber his funniest movie relating to that aspect. I'm rarely disgusted (2 girls 1 cup is cake to me);) Anything taboo to say is funny and awkward. We are all humans here, difference is our simalirity. If that makes sense. Its prolly my mercury in scorpio but I can be extremely funny on an ignorant level with ease, all my friends tip there hat to to me to how "real" and potentially offensive I can be. However, the scorpio influence likes to go to the extremes of both sides and I am very capable of saying beautiful things also. In the General principles of astrology by the great beast 666, the most wickest man on earth, Aleister Crowley, a text ghost written to evangalin Adams, (I think I messed up her first name, but she is known as the mother of astrology) Crowley gives the humors of the elements, they are:

Fire-Choleric/ Hot and Dry
Earth-Meloncholic/ Cold and Dry
Air- Sanguine/ Hot and Moist
Water- Phlegmatic/ Cold and Moist

Oh yeah. Total agreement with you there. Mercury/venus in saggitarius can be very charming and funny. It's the mutables and the way these mutable bounce off one another and dialogue throughout the chart that matter alot.

In Jim Carrey's early years he was approached with a long stick. He projected a repulsive lack of skill/aggression that was unnerving as he "exercised" and honed that manic energy of his. Bit by bit he was given roles to play and structure to fill himself with and clear direction for him to interpret, and obviously this worked out extremely well for him.

What's so fantastic about Carrey is his friendship with his demons, with whom there doesn't seem to be a split within him, which is so rare for a person not to project that onto someone or something "else" on the outside (is that Jungian enough ? Ha!Ha!Ha!). As a comedian he's become richer and more comfortable in his personal life because he is now so accepted and not flailing in his own alienation and manic state which marked his early years (just like the rest of us).
As Cindy Lauper used to sing "Money Changes Everything".:D
