The international recognition of Indonesia's independence didn't came until 27th December 1949, when the Netherlands gave up attemtping to reoccupy their former East Indies colonies.
Major events in the modern history of Indonesia:
- May 21, 1998, 9:00 am - President Suharto announced his resignation and ask Indonesian Vice President DR BJ Habibie to become the new Indonesian President
- October 12, 2002 - Blasts at crowded nightspots in the resort island of Bali kill 202 people, mostly foreign tourists. The blast is blamed on Jemaah Islamiah.
- December 26, 2004 - A massive earthquake and a tsunami devastated parts of northern Sumatra
- August 16, 2005 - The Dutch government recognized 1945 as the country's year of independence and expressed regrets over the Indonesian deaths caused by the Netherlands' Army
- May 27, 2006 - A severe earthquake struck the city of Yogyakarta
